A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Battery Boiled Over

Ok

1980 GS550E. Went through wiring harness and cleaned everything. New stater within the last 5000 miles. Original Rectifier All good grounds.

My brand new battery boiled over. Im guessing its the rectifier

Any ideas? I did notice at idle it was charging the battery at about 15v.

I checked the ac output from the stator and it got as high as 65 to 70 volts from what i remember.

Your R/R is bad or at least has a bad ground leading to over charging. Get a SH775 and wire it up properly.

SH775 Install by nessism, on Flickr

The R/R was grounded directly to the the battery. This regulator seems very large. I don't think it will fit in the space on my bike

People have come up with various ways to mount a SH775. It’ll fit. Somewhere

The R/R was grounded directly to the the battery. . . . . .
Just to verify: you mean the black wire from the r/r, right?
(or did you mean grounding the case?)

Normal. Good.

THat is some high, likley your problem. If went even higher at higer RPM, oh, yah, that is definitly your problem. Either a failed R/R or the r/r black wire is not well grounded/ connected to negitive (assuming regular type R/R).
If it is the "Honda type" R/R that has 3 stator leads, a positive, and a negative AND a sense line, the problem could be the connection of the sense line causing it to over charge (i have seen upper 18 volts if completly disconnected).

The suggestions of the SH775 is not that stock RR will overcharge and SH775 will not overcharge, it is just that if you are replacing the R/R might as well get a SH775 as it has other benefits.
If getting a SH775 , Will also need to account for the SH775 having different connector/connections. Can get a Triumph harness for something like 10-12 bucks (part number escaping me at the moment) or fabricate something with individual connections.

Yes the ground wire was directly on the battery the other connections were to the stock harness. I only changed the ground from the frame directly to the battery.

Why would you want to pay 3X more than from the link provided?

Honestly, a used SH775 at $40 shipped is a value that can't be beat. I've tested at least 20 used SH775's and have never one time found one that didn't function properly. Only issues I've found on them are broken connectors, particularly the locking tabs on the plastic housing.
