A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have minimal bike knowledge so here is the situation.

I was just trying to get the bike to start so i could sell it (sadly)

81 GS400L
Has been sitting a long time, so just charged the battery and installed it.

1st attempt wouldn't fire, set to Prime, it fired, rev'd high from choke, i didn't ease up on the choke quick enough and it shut off.

2nd attempt: fired up right away on prime, almost caught the choke in time to control it a bit but rev'd high and shut off.

3rd attempt: now it sounds like the battery is not completely dead but all out of 'juice', barely shows any life trying to turn over. the lights and horn work.

I posted a wee video here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj8IOIZrG48&feature=youtu.be

Thoughts?

Sounds like the battery is dead. They don't last forever and long periods of inactivity shorten their lives. Being sitting for a long time it could well have stale gas which will make it harder to fire and stay running. How old is the battery and how long is the bike sat idle?
Video is cool - might visit Alberta :)

And what type of a battery is it? Lead acid? They have the shortest life of all battery types.

Poor bike hasnt been taken for a ride in about 9 months. Charged the battery in June fired up let it run for a bit, August went to start it up but had no gas, put gas in and fired up. Now in October tried again with recharged battery and starting, to no success.
The battery i believe is lead acid. Name brand is Yuasa and 12 v?

Do yourself a favor:
Get an AGM battery. They last years.
Occasionally put it on a trickle charger just to let it know you care.
