When you take your battery out always disconnect the -ve (ground) terminal first to avoid flashing the spanner to earth and damaging parts(eyes,fingers,heart,spanners etc).When reconnecting,connect -ve terminal last!Cheers,Simon.:-D

One other tip - on a 1980 shovelhead HD the space between the battery positive and the rear cylinder head is precisely filled by your signet ring.

Hehe, I learned that one as a kid. My dad had to replace the 24V starter on his Scania semi-truck. He didn't feel like going around to disconnect the battery box so he figured as long as he kept his hand between the wrench and the frame there would be no spark. Would've worked too had he not had his wedding ring on. The arc melted clean through the ring, and melted a circle of skin off all the way around his finger!
