    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Bearing problem

just another thought to check, the chain isn't rubbing on the swingarm pivot or the frame?
that would sound like it is right behind the cover,,,,(close enough,anyway!)
 
My biggest problem is getting going. Once I'm going I'm fine. The bike can be a little picky sometimes.
 
Just triple checked that nothing was rubbing and can't find anything. I also pulled on the sprocket to try and simulate the load the chain would put on it, and no roughness or hard spots. I also checked to see if there was any play in the shaft and couldn't find any.

I honestly thought he was referring to the tranny bearing behind the sprocket. Re-read the failure post, clearly the bearing for the bevel drive that failed for Eric. Sorry for any misdirection.
 
i guess i'll place an order for a new chain and sprocket from z1, and go from there. I really hope its the chain.

well it is a cheaper option rather than stripping the motor apart. plus if it doesn't cure the problem you still have a brand new chain and sprockets.

i would just fit the chain first, on the old sprockets (they dont look to be in bad condition) just to see if the noise disappears.

did you check the frame and swingarm pivot for signs of wear?

i figured i'd just order and replace the front sprocket anyways. its only about 15 bucks. That way if it is one or the other it will be done. As many times as i've pulled the cover i think I can pull it in less than 5 seconds. lol. I did check to see if the chain was rubbing any where else and can't find any wear spots. I have plenty of clearance around the chain. Not looking forward to having to split the case, if it comes to that. I pray it doesn't.
 
What about chain alignment? Does the bike have a steel chain guard?
I had a chain adjuster nut back off one time.
It didn't cause a noise per se, but caused some scary handling.
A loose starter motor cover makes an annoying sound.

chain alignment is good. it has a plastic guard. everything is tight. nothing is missing.
 
New chain and sprockets should be in tomorrow. So hopefully ill have them on tomorrow night.
 
Well I got the new chain and sprockets on. Noise is still there. I also noticed a clunking noise while in gear followed by a vibration and movement of the bike while on the center stand. Like something was loose and hitting something. Noise still sounds like its coming from behind the sprocket cover. No signs of anything hitting externally. Any more ideas? Looks like I'm doomed to split the case.
 
Finally got around to splitting the case and found the problem. Their were some deep gouges on the bearing material of the second driven gear directly behind the sprocket. I'll post some pics tomorrow.
 
So "basically" what Eric was saying long ago..but didn't word his response just perfectly....right????
 
here is the bushing inside the gear. if you notice the bright shiny line on the inside. the bushing/bearing material is completely stripped away. Definitely gonna check for a blockage in the oil passage. all the other gears are fine. the roller bearing right next to it is fine. just that gear. sorry for the poor quality of the picture. phone wouldn't cooperate.
 
Wow that blows
at least you now know you can tear down and rebuild an engine.
 
i've rebuilt plenty of car and truck engines before just never torn this deep into a bike engine that has the crank and transmission in the same case before.
