    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Best place to ground?

Bike: 80 GS1000.

After moving all my electronics under my seat, I moved the grounds down to two of the motor bolts on the RS of the motor near the clutch cable and the right side rear motor mount:

This is a crappy picture but you can see the ground for the battery going to the motor case bolt. To the left of that, you can see some ring terminals under another case bolt. The ring terminals are all the grounds for all the electronics under the seat. The grounds have to travel a a decent distance so I wasnt sure if I could just run a ground from the battery to a post that Ill put under the seat and then just run all the grounds to that post with the exception of the battery ground still going to that case bolt.

Does that make any sense?

I *think* I get what you mean.

I'd make sure the engine and frame both have good ground connections direct to battery negative and I'd run a ground direct from battery negative to your electrics tray for good measure.
 
Right now, the large cable in the picture runs direct from the - on the battery to that location on the motor. I dont believe I have a ground on the frame at the moment though, so what areas would be acceptable for a frame ground and what gauge wire would be sufficent?

Im going to run a length of 14g wire from the battery - to a dedicated bolt on the under seat tray. Then use that bolt as a common ground for all of the electronics under the seat and cap it with a wing or acorn nut.
 
Sounds like a good plan. Get stainless steel star washers to place on both sides of the ring terminals to insure they dig in and provide a good ground.
 
If you don't have a frame ground connection at the moment (assuming your electrics tray isn't welded to/part of your frame), then another 14g should be fine for that.

OldVet: Good tip on the star washers! Hadn't thought of that...

Grounds

I have 3 grounds on my bike. Battery to the engine case, battery to the R/R and the R/R to the engine case.

Dumb question, how did you ground the battery to the R/R? Im thinking a wire with a ring terminal going from the bat - to the mounting bolt on the R/R?
