A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

As a note, the stainless steel lines with the chrome bevels that I bought 4 years ago need to be replaced. I thought I would never have to replace these. Rubber would have lasted longer than these lines did with the chrome ends. Now I am going for all stainless.

Removing the paint makes a weld look worse but that weld doesn't look factory to me. None of the welds on my '79 1000 look like that. Mine are generally uniform and don't have any pitting.
Inspect the frame as best you can before continuing. Re-weld any suspect welds.

Could be factory. I wouldn't rule it out. One GS frame I repainted had a couple pieces of MIG wire sticking out like a porcupine. Very shoddy work.

I've seen gnarlier factory welds on hondas and yammies. I expect suzuki had their share.

Did some sandblasting today. The cabinet is a SnapOn but it leaks a bit (cough cough) and only about 20% of the window has any visibility at all. It took my wife and I 2.5 hours to sandblast the center stand and the front turn signal brackets. We didn't even get to the swing arm, tank, or side stand.

Aircraft stripper and a wire wheel might speed things up a bit. The look on your wife's face is priceless..:D

Take that wife of yours out to dinner and then order some aluminum oxide blast media. It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to blast those parts.

Dang!

Your bike has serious rust. Makes my bike look clean (sorry). I'm grateful for what I got.

Your wife looks a bit pa-turbed...where's her respirator?

Ed

My wife was kicking ass. She was frustrated because that machine has 0% visibility. We did not expect to need respirators. I will definitely wear a respirator next time.

If you are certain that those 3 parts should have taken 20 minutes, then I might go rent a cabinet off base. I planned om blasting the frame off base because his cabinet is big enough for the frame. But he charges $1/minute. The snapon cabinet on base is $5/30 minutes.

After 45 minutes with a different blast cabinet. Visibility is much better but it pulsates and this media is not as aggressive.

Are you melting those little pellets into the eaten away metal? That would be cool...it would help the thickness. Thanks for posting.

Ed

I admit that using the base shop for sandblasting and painting is kind of cheating on the "bedroom restoration." But all disassembly, reassembly, and electrical repairs will indeed be done in the bedroom.

Painting a frame takes a lot of patience. There's so much area to do when you consider all the nooks and crannies, and round surfaces in general. Easy to miss spots and to keep the coats consistent w/o dry spots.

As a Spokane native, I applaud your GU shirt, too. :D

10 minutes into your first ride you will not care about where the restoration took place. You will be to busy enjoying the ride. Looks great so for, keep up the good work.
