If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Just a tale of my "new" GSX1100 82 model...

On the way home the bike started running rough, I thought I was about to run out of fuel it felt so bad.

Fuelled up.. still the same.
ignition coil? All 4 leads had spark (typical yellow spark, although able to jump about an inch or so)
fuel? drained fuel bowls this morning, some reddish crap in there and murky fuel..
plugs? fouled and somewhat oily.. inidcative of worn rings I think...

I reckon I happened to get an old batch of fuel. this happens more and more frequently these days.

I will get home and check the compression later anyway, it runs like it has the symptoms of a blown head gasket between cylinders.

new plugs cant hurt surely.
any thoughts?

Cheers

Ed, do the Comp check Before you buy anything.

The junk in the gas can plug up the pilot jets QUICK, get a fuel filter, if you don't have one now.

Do a thorough cleaning on the carbs after the Comp check.

Ok Busafied,

Will do the comp check first.

I have found the link to the carb cleaning section too,
looks realitvely easy although somewhat time consuming.

Would you know the spark plug gap for an 82 1100cc motor?

Cheers

Ed

stock coils and NGKD9ES plugs, 30 thou. Dyna or Accel coils, same plugs, 35 thou.

Update:

comp test dry revealed the following
cyl 1, 100
cyl 2, 125
cyl 3, 87
cyl 4, 97

comp test wet
cyl 1, 100
cyl2, 135
cyl3, 95
cyl4,100.

plug condition.

1 - little oily,
2 - light brown, clean OK
3 - heavily oily
4 - little oily

Chainging the plugs cured the immediate rough idling, however the underlying issues are still to be resolved.

I think from the comp test the engine is getting tired.
alot of oil on the plugs seems to indicate that oil os getting past the rings, however, the comp test doesnt seem to support this.

the fouled plugs do indicate incomplete combustion, and therefore i would expect alot of deposits in the combustion chamber and on the valve seats.. perhaps the loss of compression arises from this?

anyway I was planning on doing the following now.

1) check valve adjustment this is shim and bucket I presume?

2) rebuild carbs, lean out the mixture abit, particularly on number 3.

3) balance carbs.

the motor already feels better with plugs only.
Can i change the leads without having to change the entire coil?

anyway thought id keep u updated on my bike

Cheers
