Hi, I started the bike up from cold for the first time today.

Out the left pipe it smoked a bit, after a bit I revved a few times and it seemed to settle down once it was warmed up a bit.

Big deal? little deal? ok to ride this way for a while?

I was thinking valve seals, if it was a car, same idea?

thanks for indulging a noob

Could be just a touch of oil passing the valve seals when it sits, and then when warm they get pliable again and seal. Then again, it could be unburnt fuel from being on choke while it warms up. And even still, it could simply be condensation in the pipes. If its not smoking after it warms up, I wouldnt worry bout it...

Well, I had the same thing on my gs650gx. It was that way for years.....Then when I started to rebuild the bike this year I tore the motor down and found it be a broken valve guide. Strange thing though, I never heard any horrible sounds when it was running. But it did wollar out the valve seat and that valve was the cleanest of all for some reason.:-k

My gs450l did that . It was a leaking needle and seat in the carb or the float level was a bit high on that side .

Well, it seemed to have that "burnt oil" smell, as opposed to a "running rich" smell, so I was thinking seals rather than choke, but maybe, I will experiment again when I have a chance.

Seems to fire right up and doesn't take long to idle nicely though, I only need the choke turned maybe a 1/4 inch tops out of the 2+ inches it goes. On full choke it revs waaay too high.

My bike sat since 1985 when I bought it .Mine didn't smell rich either or smell of oil . It just smoked and ran slow until it cleared up. After I did carb repair over last winter it stopped and now I don't even have to use the choke unless its below 45.Runs much smoother cold or hot Also check your intake rubber boots for a crack .(vaccum leak) My bike also needed one. All I know I drove it all last summer before I got it sorted out .Good luck.Pat

OK, started it again, this time no choke. Fires right up and idles a tiny bit lumpy till you blip it a couple times, then idles at 1200rpm is nice and steady.

Right at first the smoke is whiter and smells a tiny bit like oil.

Then that settles down, 30sec-1min

then if i blip it it will puff out a rich brown/black smoke, not blown head gasket huge, but a decent amount.

After 5 min or so both go away and it seems clean, the right pipe is always fine from start on up.
Intake boots look new-ish to be honest, I think they may have been replaced in the last 5 years at leas, either way they look fine, tiny (1-2mm) "pulled back" at the tops, doesn't look like its leaking though.

So you guys think carb?

I think the little puff at the beginning is oil seals, but maybe the stuff after is carb?

so by carb repair do you mean rebuild? or did you have something specifically wrong?

I have all winter to do this so I wanna do it right, carb kits still easy to get for this bad boy?

Anything to check first? Or just go straight for a carb rebuild?

Any brand of kit good/bad?

It's oil leaking past the seals as the bike sits on it's sidestand. Safely ignorable

I think thats ok for the initial smoke, but the later one I think is the carbs from what I have been reading, is this right?

Is there a "try this first" here or straight for rebuild?

My bike sat way to long and the carbs needed new bowl gaskets and one diagram and a boot after I cleaned the petrified fuel residue out of the carb .The little old Suzuki dealer around here still stocks parts! I guess you could say I rebuilt them , but a rebuild to me is all new parts .I don't feel mine needed all that .My bike ran fine warmed up but did not cold .It smoked like you say yours is and hesitated .My left carb was leaking .Also I put in new ngk plugs .I also had to replace the failed petcock that wouldn't shut off causing flooding .Yours very well could be a valve seal but mine was not. I got parts here also, they have pictures and prices. http://www.dgy.com/ Pat

OK, so my other post went bye-bye (not sure why?). So I will post in this one.

I refreshed the carbs and the smoke is out both pipes now.

Is this the float needle valve? just a guess.

Mine had ridges and I didn't put them back in the exact way they came out (or maybe even in the same seats).

The pilot screws dont seem to do anything either.

Yours smokes out the left, I have one in my garage (not mine) that smokes out the right. Maybe we need to get together and compare notes? :-\\\

.

How many miles are on the bike? When you say cold is it say below 50F?
What is the compression numbers? Is there oil blowby in the airbox?

you are positive it is not water vapor on a cold engine ??
does it still smoke after fully hot??

what do the plugs look like. (bad plug cap/ bad plug will produce this too)

use ONLY NGK!!

you need to do

1. a leak down test at TDC compression all 4 cyl verify where pressure is escaping
2. a dry compression test all 4 cyl
3. a wet compression test all 4 cyl

the results along with plug color will tell if it simple or expensive

post results and depending--??-- there is another tier of diagnosis tests

Do you park it on the sidestand?? or centre stand?? Is the bike consuming oil?? how is fuel milage?? Any ridability issues?? Done and electrical cleanup???

Dink

BTW I use anything EXCEPT NGK plugs.
