    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I want to paint my '82 GS1100E carbs black like and '83. Can I powder coat them or should I just paint them. I can have all passages, levers, and springs taped off and plugged, but will the metal stand up to the baking process?

They will of course be disassembled then put back together without the parts that may get damaged :wink: . I am rebuilding them anyway. So will the integrity of the metal suffer from the heat?

I know nothing in that area. Sorry. im a rattle can engineer any how :lol:
 
The metal will be OK, but I'd be worried about the bodies getting damaged by a careless powder coat operator. And there are a lot of small threads that might get clogged.
 
My understanding of powdercoating is that there is not a heating process but one that requires that the surface to be painted is magnatized one polarity and the powder is another which allows the paint to be initially attracted to the metal.

I am NOT an expert on this so I may be way off course...

Hap was almost there. After the powder is "attracted" to the oppositly charged piece that you want "painted", the piece is then baked at 350 to 400 degrees. Most "O" rings don't like that kind of heat. As far as the carbs holding up to the process, they most likely will get glass bead blasted before the whole process. One needs to use duct tape(at least two layers) to cover all things that you don't want "Painted". Powder coating the carbs is probably not a smart thing to do. You are better off dissassebling the carbs and cleaning them off and getting them painted. Your local auto-paint shop should be able to help you out. If you have a auto pro shop around, most of those guys paint just about everything under the hood.

One quick note...the duct tape is only used to prevent what is under it from getting damaged during the glass bead blasting. Heat resistant tape is used to cover what you dont want to get "painted"
