A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

My headers are nasty, and I'd like to clean them up.

Any recommendations? Just pick up some Blue Job? Autosol? Stain-Magic?

I would start with the finest steel wool, "0000", then move to Autosol, should clean up nicely. Some soap and water would probably do wonders too ;)

I haven't posted a recent photo, but I did scrub everything while I cleaned engine.

Are you saying to start with 0000 steel wool dry? Good, I have plenty laying around.

...and then figure out where all the oil is coming from.

I keep moving the car out of the garage figuring I'll clean up the 650, but I never seem to get around to it.

Dry or wet, just do a tiny little spot in an obscure area first to make sure it doesn't make any markings on you exhaust. It usually doesn't with the exception of the mufflers where I've seen it on occasion make marks that won't come out. The header chrome is pretty darn tough.

the oil leaks have already been fixed. this is just the only photo i had to show the dirty headers.

SOS brand steel wool pads, specifically..are great for cleaning up chrome. They're soft enough not to scratch chrome. Lots of soap and water.

0000 steel wool did wonders on my rusted-up L model. You definitely want to wheel the bike outside when you do it, unless you like having loads of fine steel hairs everywhere in your garage for the next few months. Ask me how I know.

Just made the connection with you and your youtube channel. I've watched a couple of your videos. Nice to meet cha!

Steel wool, soap and water it is. Followed by some autosol. Thanks guys.

Update on my pipes.

I used aluminum foil and water, and a lot of elbow grease. Followed up by Autosol.

My hands hurt. :)

Man, that looks great. Good to get results like you want. Did you say aluminum foil?????? How to you use it? wadded up with soap and water?

Wow, remarkable results.

the only problem with this is that it makes the pipes look so good the engine covers now need a polish. Nice chrome and polished covers look good with that black motor.

Thanks everyone. I'll be removing the entire exhaust after riding season is over and give it a full clean and polish. You can see up by the exhaust clamps where I didn't clean and polish thoroughly. Might try to get up there with a toothbrush.

Engine covers are on the list. :) I'll get to them Ecklund. Hah.

Posplayer, I saw the Autosol being used by a guy I subscribe to on Youtube. Shipped it was about 18-19 dollars. I got mine via ebay.

Filled up a little tupperware thing with some water, folded some foil up like the size of a dishwashing sponge, and went to town. Once the foil got black and gross I tossed it and used a new piece. Word of warning, do this with some gloves on. My scrubbing hand got gray and black goop on it that didn't easily wash off. (even with my Goop cleaner)

Fantastic results!! that doesn't even look like the same bike, fantastic work. I've never had good results with tinfoil but after seeing yours I'm definitely going to give it another try.
