A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'm wanting to change from standard two person seat on my gs550e to a bobber style solo seat. But once doing that, I still have a chunk of frame behinde me. I'd really like to get the look of nothing above the rear tire.

Curious if anyone's done this and how'd they go about.

More looking for guidance in what I'm doing. Want to make sure I'm not going to ruin anything before busting out power tools.

Your opinion is respected. Good thing it's mine to ruin eh?
Personal preference.

Put a phat rear tire on it and chop the exhaust.

What these guys are trying to tell you is ... there are already tons of these 'bikes' on Craigslist that are available, you don't have to butcher up what is probably a very decent bike. Before you butcher up a nice bike, sell it to someone who will appreciate it the way it is, buy one that already looks the way you want it.

I haven't done it so I'm just bsing, but that chunk of frame could be used to mount baggage for a cruise, signals, a temporary seat for a friend-I'd just leave em on as an unknown until I was darn sure they are really no good and I might even disguise them... It is just a "look" you are after-me too, I follow a "look" model- but you just might come up with a look that's really new that uses them.

By all means there are a number of 'purists' on this site, naturally, me being one of them I guess. But it is your bike, to do with as you please. One thing that would sure go a long way here on the site is if you offered up the stock parts here for sale before cutting anything up. An example would be the exhaust if it is in good shape, I'm sure someone could send you headers that would work great for a modified exhaust system and then the hard to find OEM parts could be reused. Same with the seat, lights, ect... just a thought. Anyways, welcome to the site and it's a good thing there are difference's in this world or we'd all be riding Harley's.

Great idea about the bags off the frame on the rear.
Seen also some people fab'd their own "dog bones" instead of shocks.
Been doing a lot of YouTubeing at bobed and chopped GS's and it looks fairly simple. Thanks for the input guys. !

Go though this http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=159159 and see how many have been hacked to hell. From your other threads I know you are starting from a 78 550E.Why not get it running good and learn how to ride or even if you want to first? You are young and there's lots of time to do mods.

It's running and rideable. Not a bad little bike to begin with. Just want MY own personality to go into it. If that makes any sense?

All the OEM parts are going to be out on here for sure. Any purist can MSG me and can have them.

This is a forum of mostly older riders http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=203696 .Most have seen young guys with big plans come and go like clockwork every summer.I'm no purist either but I don't like seeing good bikes turned into unridable POS.Most "bobbers" I've seen fit that description.
Just my $.05 as we can't do $.02 in Canda anymore:D

absolutely does....Yeah, there ya go. Dog-bone struts -if I read this right, they go down where the shock's be and will incidentally keep some nice army-type soft bags away from the wheel! perhaps you could fill in the gap with tough painted mesh...hmmm. Get the ones with shoulder straps. I use one of these myself because it's so easy to take off and carry off the bike.....Sort of Afrika Corps or better yet, 8th Army dispatch rider, (seeing as I respect Rommel but won't carry his flag around....)Oh, I do see where this could be fun, alright.
Have fun, scott, for sure. Just Do No Evil and don't waste those body parts! We are always needing em! Hearts, kidneys, fenders, sidecovers..you get the drift.

I respect the turn over rate and will overcome the doubt.
I'm not doing anything to change the way it runs. I refuse to bc it DOES run. 400$ and runs, why change what's well enough. But the apperence. How i like it to look, is my own doing.

Im sad to see the type of replys in this thread. Its simply not needed to discourage someone from attempting what they want to do.. I understand the need to tinker and modify. My only opinion is not to make it look like a 'hack'. Go the extra distance to property finish the project and dont rush the process.

Good luck on your build! Take a look at my log you may see some frame ideas you like. Im trying to create a nice clean rear frame myself that looks like it belongs on the bike.. When i got mine it was already hacked with the saw and now i want to clean it up. See what i did to get your mind running

bobber build

bobber build

I too am building a bobber/chopper style bike.
I bought a barn find 82GS 1100E ,and was told it was too special to chop up, so I traded it to gsrick for him to restore , and I got a 81 gs 750 e 16 valve engine and various parts amounting to a full bike in trade.
I will do a seat drop, narrowed yamaha strato liner fenders, a custom license plate / 39 ford light mount, lowered ride height , spoke wheels, dual disc front single rear, home made short z apes, a bobbed fat low tank, single sprung seat, removable pad rear fender, with all foot controls moved forward, Thinking a two tone burgandy and ivory paint with burnt orange pin strip . wish me luck !
would like to see pictures of y'alls projects .
