    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just picked up 78 GS 550. Didn't run when I got it. things i did so far was toredown carbs and completely cleaned them clean the points removed the air filter to make sure that was not the problem. Seem to have good spark at all cyl. Sand blasted the plugs. Checked that pipes on all cyl are warming up (yes they are) also did comprestion test.fresh gas with seafoam.

Now what it dose is. Seems to idle good in 1st gear is seems like it wants to go like hell go to 2nd and open it up and it falls flat on its face seem that at over half Throttle it bogse and if you stay on it dies out won't go over 45 to 50 miles a hr. I'm stumped as what to do at hhis point. Thanks in advance to all
 
you have to have the airbox and filter installed and all the boots sealing 100%
sounds leans from to much air.

Hi Mr. intel2you,

With stock jetting in the carbs, these bikes need a tightly sealed air intake system that includes new intake boot O-rings, usually new intake boots themselves (the old ones are hard, cracked, leaking), a tightly sealed airbox with a clean, lightly oiled air filter. If you run the bike without the airbox or air filter installed it will be getting too much air and will bog when you twist the throttle. Carefully read and follow all the information in the links below.

Dose the VM carbs have them orings the boot have no cracks and are nice and soft yet I will put air box and filter back in and try it. So are you saying I can put a small a little air filter on each carb and it run right?
 
Hi,

Any changes to the intake or exhaust will require jetting changes to the carbs. If you install pod filters you will have to change the jetting in the carbs to compensate for the increased air flow. Please read carefully all the information in the links in my previous post.

The boots do have those O rings and they are a regular source of air leaks. Your bike doesn't stand a cat in the proverbials of running right if it hasn't got the airbox and filter on there - it'll be pants.

You can run pod filters but you need to know what you are doing with carb tuning. I guess as you are asking some basic stuff here it might be a bit out of your comfort zone though.
