    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Boyer Brandsen replacement ignition

I have an issue with my ignition coils on my bike (1977 GS750 with 850BigBore kit).

I already have the Boyer Brandsen analogue electronic ignition fitted to it but since my coils are playing up I an now at yet another fork in the road and deciding which path to tak.

I either need to get 4-5 ohm coils which all seem to be around the same $$ (Au $200 the pair) or I can go for a complete digital ignition such as the Boyer Brandsen micro digital, which comes with everything including the coils, but is priced at Au $520

I am keeping the bike and have done loads of stuff to it to bring it back to a good condition, but Im not sure about the digital ignition.

Has anyone else used this ignition from Boyer? What did you think of it??


On the manufacturers website it seems to indicate a lot of positives, including:

The Micro Digital ignition provides almost total control over ignition functions.

It offers electronic control of advance and retard functions. However, because the Micro Digital features a built in computer, the size of a postage stamp, it can make more than a million ignition decisions per second, to constantly monitor engine speed and time the spark precisely to suit.

The programming of this micro processor also gives control over ignition coil energy, starting speed, tickover stabilisation and rev limits!

All units are guaranteed for five years.
 
The guy who started up BB ignition emigrated to Oz a few years ago. I've forgotten his name but he is apparently producing decent gear over with you. Might be worth looking for him via Google. When he was running BB it was cutting edge stuff at cheap prices (classic scientist running a company). He might have something better and cheaper.

I read the same thing about this a while after I purchased my unit. I've had a BB fitted to the 850 for the last 3 years. I'm very happy with it. It makes a huge difference to the torque range and shape over the stock points and centrifugal advance set up. I've beeen able to bring my maximum torque down from 7500 to 6700 rpm.
These units seem to be reliable too, which is always a bonus with digital stuff. I think the key is to protect them well from vibration and they will be reliable.
 
If the Boyer is working good I would just change the coils. Maybe a used set from a Bandit,RF, Early GSXR, (all 3 ohm) If conserned about 5 ohms ? add a 2 ohm balast resistor to the 12V line
 
I managed to track down the guy, nowdays he runs PAZON ignitions out of New Zealand.

Unfortunately he doesnt do any units for jap bikes as yet.

I was chatting with him via email and mentioned that the boyer seems pretty good but isnt quite perfect and he said the advance curve is too narrow (too fast).

I have ordered some of his 4.5ohm ignition coils and alloy heatsinks to replace my old coils since I discovered that one coil had a small crack in it (speculating that it is the original coils too)

I was looking to upgrade to the boyer digital ignition but have since decided to wait until Pazon offers a digital unit to suit my GS750


Though I have certainly been happy with the improvements that my boyer unit gave over the stock ignition system (points), it could certainly be improved and Im hoping that Pazon may offer this in the future.
 
I put a Boyer/Brandsden ignition on a Triumph 650 Bonneville about 20 years ago. It lasted less then a year. They may be better now but they wont get any of my money to find out. You used the stock coils in series back then
