    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Brake Light Feature - regular flicker in lower element

Recently I changed the light bulb in the rear brake light plastic enclosure.
(1980 GS550). I was surprised to see that when the bike is running, the top element glows all the time (normal?) but the bottom element flickers fast but regularly, and when front/back brakes are used, the top element stays glowing and the bottom element goes from a flicker to always on. When I release the brakes, the bottom element goes from always on back to the regular flicker.

Is this normal OEM behavior, or has the previous owner added a nice little safety feature? I actually like the flicker.

It sounds like someone has installed a safety feature on your bike. It's a brake light pulse to alert the drivers behind you that you're stopping. The taillight prtion of your back light is supposed to always be on as well as the the headlight, a safety feature mandated in '79, I think.
 
Except they put it on wrong, it flickers when the brakes are not on?
That has to be confusing for the idiot cager that's not paying attention anyway.

I like it this way -- a flicker always in the bottom filament to gain attention unless the brakes are poked. I'm pretty sure I /wouldn't/ want a fresh flicker to indicate braking. If I was in a car following a bike I wouldn't take a flicker to mean brake, but a flicker would get my attention. Flickers are used now in traffic lights to get attention only - flicker is /not/ used to indicate anything other than "Pay Attention To Me".

A "new" solid red glow is a universal sign of active braking, IMHO. Flickers are for attention getting only.

One more question, how will you know when all this flickering burns out your brake light bulb?
