A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Building a gas tank

Im thinking of attempting a cafe ducktail seat and pan from either steel or alu...will be my first attempt at something of this involvement, so i may need some info from ya whence i get the stuff together...

If it is to be aluminum, get 1100 or 1300 series pure aluminum. It is dead soft and can be formed extensively before it work hardens too much and gets brittle. You can anneal it with an oxy/acetylene torch if you have one available, anybody who forms tanks with aluminum anneals several times through the forming process.

If it is to be steel, look for a deep draw steel if possible, they are specifically formulated and milled for use in stamping and forming processes and can be drawn amazingly before they work harden too much.

If you just want a different shape to your tank....just add sheet metal....bent formed or shaped....close to what you are looking to achieve....than use fibeglass to bond and seal everything together.

I am stretching my cruiser tank as we speek using this method... I ended up stretching it about 5 inches...I have even done it to my cafe tanks.

Heres some pics of the process that I am doing now with one of my cruisers:

Whoa that's pretty cool man. I never even thought about doing that. Thanks for the tip I may use it sometime in the future

I did carbon fiber overlays on all my body work a couple years ago. Here is a picture of the tank before sanding and final clear coat.

I have some pictures posted in the for sale forum and the performance forum of the whole bike if that's what you mean. I also have a lot of really high res pictures (3MB) that I can't post until I reduce the quality/size. Thanks, the job was pretty cool, and at one point my friend and I imploded the tank in the vacuum bag b/c stupidly I forgot to cut a vent into the inside of tank to allow atmospheric pressure in. It was pretty funny, then I blew it back up with compressed air and cleaned up the body work again, then re-covered it. It ended up with two layers in the end, so now its pretty indestructible with two layers of carbon over steel. It only looks light weight. My co-workers and friends got a lot of laughs out of the implosion incident since I'm an ME.

As mentioned, glass tanks can be dangerous in accidents and in most jurisdictions are illegal for street use.

What Spyug said-I remember a nasty accident that happened many years ago when a rider on a Norton fitted with a fiberglass tank T-boned a car at an intersection. The tank ruptured and a fire started. That one was fatal and if memory serves there were severe burns to the car occupant(s)? as well.

I looked all through Google and could find nothing on its legality in Ontario, Canada however. Maybe they're legal...?
