I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Cam tensioner maxed out?

The various engines have different lengths of plungers, but the tensioner looks the same on the outside. You sure you have the correct one for your engine?

No, I have no idea if it is correct or not. Wondering on plunger length from another 850, so I can compare it to mine.

Thanks Chuck for the help. I got it all figured out. But i just have one question. Does anybody know the length of the chain tensioner plunger for the 83 850gl?

tkent02: Which thread?
Certainly not this one.

Nope, nowhere in this thread did I ask a question. Do people just like posting to say they have 1000's of post?

No, we'd all like to know what was wrong with your tensioner, if anything.
If you want to play 50 questions, go ahead.

Now we have to carry a kicking horse:(. At least it is just a Shetland pony.

The problem is that it is at its max rotation, but the chain falls way under max 20 pin length. So why maxed out? Still cant figure out why tensioner is maxed with everything else in spec??????

I have taken apart, cleaned and made sure tensioner functions properly. But still has no more room to take slack up from chain. Nothing is wrong with the tensioner, except that it may be the wrong one, or the head was shaved and they didn't accommodate with the chain and or tensioner. This was all previously mentioned, except for that my head my have been shaved. As it sits now chain has tension but tensioner has no more room to take up slack. Not being rude, but just read. I shouldn't have to repeat everything that IS already in this thread.

The one question i need answered is the length of the tensioner plunger. That will verify for me if mine is right or not. But everybody keeps saying I haven't asked a question. When its here in black and white.

".......But then I noticed that it was at its max tension point. "

Just how did you arrive at this conclusion ? camcover off, drooping chain ? So tensioner plunger has run out of travel ? Did you "reset" it and reinstall correctly ?

Yes, I have reset tensioner. The only travel that is left in the plunger is from the spring on the plunger. The plunger is pushed out to its max. The knob with the larger spring on outside of tensioner has no more travel left, it is at the end of its rotation.

Sorry I still don't have an 850 tensioner to measure here with me. If you find out if it's the same part as a 750 I can measure one of those in a couple days.
I think it is the same part.

Thinking about going to gs graveyard and pulling one and finding length. Or I may just install manual tensioner. Know where i can find a good one?

Sounds like the wrong cam chain tensioner for that bike. The other possibility I see is that someone replaced the cam chain and installed the wrong length.
