Cam Timing --- GS1100EZ

Plug wires.... Coil 1 (left) is plugged into cylinders 1 and 4. Coil 2 (right) is plugged into cylinders 2 and 3. There's a guy on craigslist selling a brand new set of green 3 ohm Dyna DC1-1 coils with the wires and caps. Should I get that?
Make sure that the left coil is wired as the left coil. Both coils have the orange with a white stripe going to them. The left coil should also have a white wire going to it. The right coil should have a black with yellow stripe going to it. If you have a timing light, use it to see if the spark is happening at the right time for the correct cylinders. Dar

Now that's a good suggestion. However, I just checked and they are correct .

A bad air leak would be due to either carbs not sealing well into the rubber boots and/or rubber boots having cracks and/or o'rings between boots and the head failing (if that model does have those o'rings I'm not sure)

deep breath & just think of chickadee vibrating away on the back, when you eventually sort it out! :o
Yes, that will make this all worth it.

This bike doesn't use the o-rings. It's just a rubber boot that clamps on at the head and on the carbs. The carbs are sealing very well but I'm not sure if the boots are cracked or not.

The boots are soft enough to be able to put the carbs back on with no hassles. Yesterday, I took the carbs off and put them back on like 5 times with no problems.

At this point, I don't really know what else to do. I will try to start it with the 19 pin setup since everything was lined up closer than the 20 pin setup.

I did not clean and rebuild the carbs but all 4 sparkplugs are wet with fuel.

Float bowls are full of fuel and floats are set correctly.

Good spark on all 4 sparkplugs. Got shocked a few times lol.

20 pins apart but the notches are still slightly off.

I just adjusted the valves today and they are now .005" clearance on all valves.

I don't have a compression tester but I did what chef said and my thumb got sucked down the sparkplugs hard! And then it blew back out.
Do not set the cam timing at 19 pins

So the last thing would be a very bad air leak?
Do not set the cam timing at 19 pins
That is wrong

How OLD is the fuel? You may want to try one of those spray-fluid-starters (not sure what you call them)

Guys....

It was as TeamDar said, check the sparkplug wires and make sure they are in the correct spots. It turns out that the black/yellow and orange/white were in the wrong spots. And because of my stubbornness that I did it "correctly" the first time, it gave me this huge headache :o.

Video tonight :D.

Thank you for all of your help! It idles pretty well but the throttle is kinda sticky and laggy. Carb clean and new throttle cable coming up.

Oh yes, it's still with the 20 pin setup :).

Feel free to hit me or give me a high-five. Your choice. Can't believe it was such a simple problem..... :o

EDIT: I get it now! I know why flames were shooting out! The coils were firing the wrong cylinders! So the exhaust valve was open when it fired... I will admit that the flame looked cool. At least I was smart enough to do it outside and not in the garage unlike that Harley Davidson owner LOL!

congrats!!
I've learnt some cool things following your thread. cheers

Thanks!

I've learned quite a lot from this whole thing as well. Cam timing, valve adjustments, double-triple checking .

A question about valve adjustments. Why is it that the PO's never do them? I literally only took me 30-45 mins, no joke. And that was my first time!

Thank you Mr. Suzuki for making the 16 valves so easy! :)

Honestly FC, it's always the stuff we think we checked because we did but maybe we didn't look close enough or maybe it looked right to us at the time versus what i should have been. I'm glad you got it running. Now just finish cleaning things up and get out for a ride.

Exactly! The same thing can be said about missing parts or tools. It's there but you're not looking close enough. I hate it when that happens .

Anyways, I'm glad that I got it running after 2 months of hard work :D.

Now I need to chase this electrical problem.... I'll save that for another thread.

Congrats FC !!

At least I was kinda right in saying you must be having a BIG prob if the bike doesn't want to start, lol :p

Thanks! I was scared when chef said it may be a bent valve. That sounded expensive!

I am very glad that it was a simple problem. Runs quite well too... The sound of this bike is so nice! :D

Oh, funny story. I was not expecting the bike to run when I switched the wires. So my valve cover was off. The idle was kinda high too so oil went flying and some oil dripped on the engine :o. I quickly stopped the engine and filled it back up. Not a lot of oil loss so no worries. It was still between the full and low mark. But I don't have a valve cover gasket either. Gotta get one! But I should have known better. I shake my head at myself...

Thanks to everyone that has assisted me and for answering all of my questions!

In that video it does NOT sound like it is running on all 4 cylinders. At least from what I am hearing. Ray.

I don't have the best camera but I'm sure it's running on all 4 cylinders. All 4 pipes were hot!

The PO of my 750 just changed over the plug wires. When I put them where they should be I had the same problem. If on your OP here you had said this was happening I may have clued in and said check those wires.Big plus now is you fixed what was a problem.

I would like to add something I saw in a photo in this thread.

when checking valve lash on a 16 valve head you need to use 2 feeler gauges and do both valves on a rocker at the same time. the tolerance space of the rocker to inner shaft will twist giving you a wrong clearance reading if you only do 1 at a time.
