If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I want to free my willy...Can I remove my slip on exhaust (off my 4 into 1) on my gs1100 without affecting anything else then performance (the slip on has one baffle)...(during the winter I am going to be finding an exhaust setup I like, just love the sound without the slip on right now...Thanks in advance and for continuing to help this newbie to all things containing metal...

p.s. check my profile for a pic of the bike...

Running loud pipes creates anger in the community at large toward us motorcyclists. Please continue to run your baffle until you can find a pipe with the tone you like - just make sure the new pipe is not overly loud either.

As a side note, changing the muffler restriction will most likely require rejetting the carbs so that's further reason to leave well enough alone.

i say make it as loud as you want.. its your bike, not the communities.

if you get a ticket for it, its too loud for the law, even if its not too loud for you!

lol

Very selfish attitude you have there. Very disappointing.

You are being far to polite!!! I won't be. Myself and most of the people in my community we are sick and damn tired of these totally selfish biker wannabes running around town with obscenely loud pipes. I like the sound of properly modded bikes but more and more they just seem to be going for the loud factor. The loud pipes save lives thing maybe partially true but why these arrogant self-centred people need to heard 2 - 3 miles away is totally beyond me. Get a life and show just a little respect for others. That felt good, been wanting to say that for some time now.

Been there done that. Good to hear from ya Chef!!!
I wasn't sure if you knew my GSR name. Glad you made it home OK. What a ride!
I hit mud slides that closed one side of the 395 and some down pours. What a blast!

Also be aware that Colorado in general (Denver in particular) is cracking down on motorcycle noise. If I remember correctly, there is even an ordinance stating that replacement pipes have to have the original manufacturer's stamp of approval, meaning no more Kerkers or MACs for our bikes or any others. Of course, that enrages the Harley crowd, but they seem to be the ones that cause most of the noise, anyway.

.

Even race tracks are going to Noise limits, Why do you need to agravate everyone ?Then later in life when you can't hear people talking to you ?? If you remove the slipon the bike will run like shet !!

That really sucks. There are lots of really nice soundly modded Harleys and other bikes out there that aren't excessively loud. What's going happen to bikes like ours that are almost impossible to find stock exhaust for. I must say I could see it coming. I guess a special salute (or wave LOL) to the loud crowd is in order.

Glad I could help

Glad I could help

I guess I need to get rid of one of my most expensive vices...the one that feeds the belly's of chevron CEO's...It's like buying organic food from Wal-Mart or riding a Harley but wearing shoes made for 15 cents an hour in a third world country. I love my bike but never have had a regret with walking barefoot in a field surrounded by boulders and pine trees. I do regret asking this question and am asking myself what else could I be doing with my time...

Don't regret asking old mate.Throw it out there and see what others think, then decide for yourself. It's your ride, ping your own wire. For me,I like a more subdued note till she comes on song, and then wail baby wail.Cheers,Simon.:)

Hallo, wakker worden!

Hallo, wakker worden!

How nice, someone askes a question, and the answer from an other guy is enough to leave the original question behind and start all over the loud pipes controversie again.
By the way, did none of you even consider that 80GS750 was just being sarcastic?

Are you talking about completely removing the megaphone/canister pipe?

If so, you will see a neg. affect on performance. bottom end/ low mid range.
Also, wouldn't the exhaust exit right below you, Foot peg area, Brake res. ? Oil pan? Not a prefered place for heat IMO.
What about fumes at traffic stops?
I feel the noise would more than likely annoy YOU after a little while, unless you're the type who just "Blasts around the Block" a couple times a month.

How about trying to come up with or mod one of those short baffles from the modern era sport bikes to fit.

I'm with paco on this. You gotta have some pipe on it.
I actually like the sound of a smooth running quiet bike. You only hear it when I want you to. OK maybe on the highway open pipes are doable but ripping down residential blocks at 2:30 in the morning on a weeknight setting off car alarms just sends me for my guns.
Anyway is there a thread with exhaust mods already started? I would like to change my exhaust (kinda ratty looking after 30 yrs) but want to keep the smooth sound. I would like to add modern cans to my stock headers, keeping the dual exhaust. Anyone running something like that? If so how does it sound? Sorry to hijack but this thread is all over the place and I saw an opportunity to ask.

Noise ordinance enforcement has already started here. Last month there was a Harley rally near here. It's an annual event that attracts many bikers from the area and has been generally well tolerated. For years the authorities looked the other way concerning noise, illegal lighting, illegal modifications (like ape-hangers that are taller than 18 inches) etc. etc. Well this year all heck broke loose. State troopers everywhere nailing people. They had a decibel meter and set up a check point where the bikers had to rev their engines and if they were too loud, they got a ticket. Lots of tickets were handed out and the talk in the local papers and radio for a week was how come the authorities let this go on for years and just now decided they would enforce. A buddy of mine went to court to fight it and basically the judge was unsympathetic, fined him and told to him get the bike within noise limits. If he doesn't and gets caught again the judge said to be prepared to pay "big time". It's a sign that the authorities and courts around here are getting on the same page and the message is pretty clear. I'm not taking sides here but apparently we've come around to "if you breaks the law, you pays the price" attitude. I've never seen as many bikers get pulled over as I have this year. A sign of the times I guess. Plus, NY has a really bad deficit this year and needs money I suspect that might have something to do with it.

My Yoshi makes a nice noise, pretty docile while cruising but sings when you really wind the bike up.
That's ideal for me as I don't like to upset the neighbours (& I get bored listening to it).
Open pipes & big harley clack clacks aren't my thing....

I'm the yellow helmet.. on the way back I'm at about 6 grand in 2nd.

The last bike is also mine.. that one runs a Vance & Hines 4:1.

Maybe others on here will comment as to which they were & what pipes they run.... some are stock.

Dan :)

My street megaphone is fairly quiet bopping around town under 4000 RPM, but when you open it up it turns heads for sure.
