    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can I use "new" bar controls on my GS1000 build?

I have begun mockup for my GS1000 cafe build and have started working on my bars and controls. I orders some clip ons but after I mounted my stock controls on them, Ive realized that they just look worn. I jumped on ebay and was looking at some Suzuki SV stock clip ons that come with all the controls and levers. Can I use these controls on my GS1000 and just mate the wires with my stock wiring harness? I plan on freshening the harness up and changing all of the electrical plugs so I assume I can just match the wires up when I change out the connectors. Anyone have any insight?
 
Yes, they will work by doing exactly the steps you listed. Use the old plugs & put the new wires into them. Ray.
 
You will most likely have to cut off the plug and switch it over to the old style. You might get lucky though so look at the contact pins before hacking off the plug - you may be able to move them over to the old plug like Ray suggests.
 
I did this with Bandit controls for the gf's GN250 and I cut about 6 inches back from the plugs and just checked the wires and the diagrams and soldered them with heat shrink over them and it works great. Just take your time and don't solder anything till you check it, just incase. I just twisted them together first, pluged it together, tried it and saw that everything worked. Then I did it right. It's better to check than have to cut a few and resolder stuff.
 
once again, I wish I did before and after pics. Mine came out killer neat because the heat shrink tube is under the original black tube that covers the wires. then I wrapped up the slit I made in it with electrical tape and slid the whole part into the headlight housing. It looks WAY better than stock. Plus I can just put a couple male blade type connectors into the wires from my clutch handle switch and then the wires for that will be all contained in that bundle of wires too. REALLY neat. it looks factory.

Can you take some pictures of what it looks like now please? I think I'm just going to re wire the entire bike. I just have to find some new conectors to use....suggestions?
 
I did a complete re-wiring of my GS550 in 2006 (not a new copy of the harness, but a re-engineered wiring).
As part of this, I put a detachabale connector-row from RS-Components.com, in the headlight housing.
During the process, I changed the bar controls to "better, but still used" from ebay, and wired either to the connector in the headlight housing, or made a direct connection (solder+heatshrink), knowing that i have to cut and re-solder the wire if I ever need to detach the control.
