Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Can I use this rectifier??

Hi guys

I bought a new rectifier thinking mine was done.
The new r/r has 5 wires. Red Black Pink Green Yellow.
I think the Black wire is a sense wire and Red is power to the battery, so how do I make the 3 stator wires work with only 2 remaining r/r wires(Pink and Yellow)?

The headlight wire mod has been done.

I'll join in with the guess work;
*RED is R/R(+)
*Black is R/R(-)
*The rest are stator wires(order does not matter).
Follow your heart or alternatively GS Charging System Health for instructions for hook up.

I doubt it is SERIES and I'm assuming you know you shunt be SHUNTING

Black ground, red power, the other three stator. I'm guessing. It's probably a shunt type R/R. On a GS the only real smart upgrade is a Series 5 wire R/R the Shindengen SH-775 being the current most popular and affordable, but I have no Idea what is available in South Africa.
"I doubt it is SERIES and I'm assuming you know you shunt be SHUNTING" Bad pun Jim.

I was going to put on a compufire series one, hopefully it will be one of my 1000's Christmas presents. I know
I shunt put it off much longer!!

A Compufire is something like 3x the money of a SH775, and both are series type.

I did hook it up using the black as the ground but it did not work. I read on a different forum that the black wire is the sense wire and green is ground for this r/r.

What was the source of your new R/R? :-k

In other words, for what bike was it originally intended?

I ask because of the strange colors. It's possible the R/R is intended for a bike with a variable-field alternator, not a permanent magnet stator, such as you find on our bikes.

Assuming it is a Shunt R/R then you might be able to riddle which wire are which by looking at the stator pages under the R/R tests. Basically there are 6 diodes in there that will block flow in only one direction from stator wire to(+) and stator wire to (-). If it is consistent with those measurements then you probably have the correct color coding and it still does not work then it is probably broke.

Stranger things could happen :)

It is for a scooter/quad. I did test the r/r using the multimeter on the diode setting. On the pink and yellow wire I got 519 on both.

That R/R will work great on your GY6, but will be useless on your GS. Looking at the picture of the stator, it appears that it is NOT a 3-phase stator, hence the fewer wires.

I don't want to sound harsh, but I see this far to often. While it is nice to have initiative and try to do things on your own, if you are getting ready to buy something that you are not sure is going to work, ask on the forum if it will work before you spend (waste) your money. If you get something that was recommended, then can't figure out how to wire it, come back again and ask how to wire it.

I had one bike in my shop recently that I was refurbishing. The owner (first-time motorcycle owner) would bring me one accessory or another and say "I'd like to put this on the bike." I would have to show him why it would not fit. I asked him more than once to run those ideas past me before buying them, I'm not sure he fully caught on.

That was certainly an attractive price on that GY6 R/R, but unless you found one locally, the shipping must have been HORRENDOUS.

.

Haha thanx guys. I found it locally and very cheap. All I need now is to go and find a GY6 scooter. Cant wait...

I got a nice used R/R on ebay for like $25, it came off a Honda Goldwing. Solved all my charging issues, been running great for years. Just make sure you do research as Exactly which kind of R/R you need, there are many different types!

Been picking up SH-775's for around $40 used on ebay. Toss the one you have and go with what's known to be good.
