    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can the head gasket be re-used?

Suzuki GS1000G 1981, I failed to put in the 4 O rings on the studs (head) so now it's leaking!!
Do they go above the head gasket or below?
Can I re-use the head gasket, I was thinking about cost! as a head gasket is $80, but the whole gasket set is $95, thats kind of stupid if you ask me, but thats Suzuki prices!
 
from working on cars id say you shouldnt unless you want to pull your engine apart AGAIN shortly down the road.

i dont know about these bikes but IMO it's a good idea to replace the head bolts too.
 
Gaskets work by being compressed, thereby filling up the little inconsistencies in the mating surfaces. Chances are when its reused you'll never get exact alignment again, and you can't really afford to over torque the head studs... So, no you shouldn't use them again. Hey its only money right? 8O And nothing is too good for our babies :D
 
Cheers guys, It seems all my money goes on the GS, will have to save a bit then to get the gaskets again.
 
check on ebay, I recently bought a full GENUINE SUZUKI engine gasket set for my GS 750 (ebay) and paid US$76.

Including postage and currency exchange fees it came to AU$112

SO! DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE O RING SEALS GO ABOVE OR BELOW THE HEAD GASKET?
 
(quietly) no one has given me an answer yet! I know I would never use a car head gasket again, but I know guys that have re-used them on bikes and not leaked. Now! was that quiet enuff?
 
Phil, the "O" ring seals go on the four center studs. There is a grove around each of the four studs for the "O" rings to seat into. The "O" rings go on first, on top of the crankcase. The gasket goes on top of that. Also, on the sleeves that protrude from the bottom of the cylinderhead, there is supposed to be a large "O" ring around each sleeve (about 3" diameter). I would replace those also. They arent expensive and it not worth risking using a crushed one. Sorry to say, I would not consider reusing the gasket. The sucker will likely leak.

Head gasket "O"rings

Depends on the replacement gasket. Some come with the "O" rings all ready intergral with the parent gasket. I got an Athena one and they advised the separate "O" ring sets, (in their own little gasket), go on the cylinder and the gasket over the top. I did not trust them, it did not look like it would seal and got another with intergral "o" rings.
