This might not be new to anyone but i thought i would post it just in case.

Subaru upper engine cleaner does a top notch job on cleaning up inside your carbs.
In Australia you have to buy it from a Subaru dealer, dont know about other countries.

Run some BP Ultimate fuel through them if the bike is still running. The high octane rating helps to dislodge sludge and particles. Otherwise I just disassemble and give a bit of a scrub with a toothbrush, pipecleaners, fine wire and metho.

Ahhh. yet another miracle attributed to "high octane". :-k

"Octane" is a measure of resistance to ignition due to temperature. Higher octane fuels were developed as a response to higher compression. The higher compression was raising the temperature in the combustion chamber, lighting the mixture before the spark occurred. Higher octane fuel suppressed that combustion, allowing the spark to do its job. It's the higher compression that gives the additional power, not the additional octane.

I just can not imagine how "octane" will dislodge sludge and particles.

i recently stripped and cleanedmy gs1000e 1980 carbys which were a total discraceafter having the bike 8 yrs and never cleaning them,,, i did use a small bottle of YAMAHA CARBY CLEANER you mix with unleaded ,i used 98% unleaded but it warns you to only soak for 3-4 hrs then rinse other wise it will start to attack the body surface its great how the bike runs with clean carbys ...hope this helps regards david

I posted this in the other thread, but i will put it here as well.

Mix Metho(methylated spirits) and petrol 50/50 and let the carbs soak for a day or so, also an air compressor is a very handy thing to have.

Afterwards use carb cleaner to spray into the hard to reach places.

Well, i am certainly not talking about the top of the trees in my backyard.

Its not a trick to clean carbs but to keep them "unworn" i run Redex fuel treatment for added uper cylinder and carb lubricant. Having rare 29mm smoothies its just peice of mind knowing the slides are coated in "oil". I run 100 octane Shell race fuel and BP ultimate "cleaniest fuel in Oz they say" at 50/50 for no pinging and that nice smell and white exhaust that us old people remember lol

For you US guys, go chevy dealer, buy Chevy TOP ENGINE CLEANER, spray this on and in your disassembled carbs, and watch the crap run off......
Also good to use, Seafoam, Chevy Intake cleaner, Wynns top engine cleaner, and DONT KNOCK THIS ONE............................ WATER, get a hot engine and spray mist cold water in the intake (don't drown the motor) and this works wonders.
Also, red transmission mixed within your gas will do the trick too.

I called BS on the water a few years ago, we did it and opened up the motor and couldn't believe a lot of the carbon had come off!

Well assuming we are talking about the original intent of cleaning the INSIDES of the carbs it will probably run into every nook and cranny it can. Some spray carb cleaner will probably flush much of it out once it is loosened. That doesnt mean the carbs are CLEAN though. Go through all the proceduers and be sure all the jets, pickup tubes, idle circuit jet holes and such are perfectly spotless. As many many times it has been posted there is no such thing as a "spray and reassemble" carb job. Thats my $0.02 worth.
