Are Carb rebuild kits worth the money? Looking for opinions.

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

In my experience, most of the time, one doesn't need most of the stuff that comes in the kits - jets, needles, hard parts, etc. What one DOES need is the soft stuff that seems to be left out - O-rings, gaskets, soft parts.
In my experience, all the hard parts can be refurbished perfectly by a thorough disassembly, clean (by yer favorite method) and reassembly.
Seek out the soft stuff - O-rings, gaskets, etc. and be happy.

Hi,
The best practice is to re-use all of the metal bits after disassembly and thorough cleaning. Cleaning should include dipping in a carb cleaner bucket (Berryman Carb Dip or similar) for up to 24 hours. Then reassemble using a new O-ring kit from http://cycleorings.com. If necessary, replace any worn or broken parts with OEM parts. They may be a little more expensive but they WORK and you don't have to worry about it for another 20 years or so. Those aftermarket "carb kits" contain inferior parts. Please see my website for more information.

I just finished rebuilding my carbs. (GS750E) I agree with the other posts to reuse everything that is not rubber. I used the gasket kit from cycleorings.com - very happy, worked like a charm. However, my air mixture adjustment screws were a real challenge to get out, and were pretty much useless after disassembly. The K&L carb kits that I bought included these screws (in brass), and are difficult to buy any other way. So originally I thought I had wasted money on the kits, I'm sure glad I had them after all.

I ended up ordering the Z1 Kits. Upon tearing it down I noticed some damaged float seats and the floats were a mix of sizes, and I could go on. Decided to just give it a fresh start. Kits were perfect for what I was doing. In the future I can do what everyone suggested which is just cleaning the hard parts and replacing the o-rings.
