  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

Carb rebuild problem

O.k., so I got up the courage to start on my carb rebuild today and hit a snag almost from the start. A previous owner seems to have put a Stage 3 type kit on this '82 GS1100GLZ, and I aparently screwed it up by putting the stock airbox back on it. So I have this sorta generic rebuild kit that the suzuki dealer ordered and it has TWO sets of jets, according to the dealer one is for the 1100E and the other set is for my bike. The number stamped on the one set is 107 and the number stamped on the other is 116. the main jets in the carbs right now are stamped 160. If you look thru them you can tell that they are definately different sizes. But which one of the new ones is stock for the 1100 GL, the 107 or the 116?

What type of carbs do you have?
Are they BS34SS?
My Suzuki service manual and Haynes manual do not list a GLZ model. Could it be under another name?
 
I know that they are mikuni BS carbs, but I'm not sure if they are the 32mm or the 34 mm, I haven't found a number on them yet, but I wasn't thinking of looking for one until you asked, I am guessing 32 as it seems to me that the 34 would be on the E model, not the cruiser style. Don't know if that is good logic, but I think it makes sense. The "Z" in the GLZ part represents the model year (82) according to the chart that I found on this site and the L means it is shaft drive (also indicating that it is the 8 valve motor). I am trying to do my homework, but I am pretty much ignorant when it comes to carbs in general ( my truck is fuel injected and a breeze to work on)
 
My shop manual for my 82 1100G lists BS34SS carbs with #115 main jet, #40 pilot jet. I would think they are the same carbs as yours. And of course under the pilot screw heading you get the ever informative "pre-set". :twisted: :twisted: Hope this helps, Safe Riding, Bill

Just to be repetative, redundant, and to err on the side of caution: does your shop manual tell you wether the the 11000 with just the "G" suffix is the 16 valve or the 8 valve engine.And shaft or chain? It seems to me that the "standard" 8 valve would use the smaller jets. I just want to ask as manny stupid questions as I can before I get into this, I hate having to do things twice especially when a little pre-empitive knowledge can help avoid it.

Both mine and the one in the shop manual are 8 valve motors. I just got mine on the road and have put maybe 500 miles on it so far. Even shifting at 6500 to 7000 (havent taken her any higher yet) this thing is a rocket. I can't imagine what it would be like with 16 valves or a big bore kit!!!! O.K. Bill, so far sounds good, but here is where it gets weird:

the new kit has two full sets of jets

Main: I have one stamped with 107 and one stamped with 115.
So, I think I'm o.k. on that one.

Pilot: I have one stamped with a 45 and one with no stamping at
all !!??!!??

Air jet (?): One stamped 160 and one stamped 170


Now, if I was a gambling man, I'd say that the larger numbers all go together, which still leaves a big question mark next to the pilot jet. I feel like all my answers are there somwhere , but I'm just not comprehending things.
 
The air jet specs at #170. On the pilot jet is the unmarked one a tad smaller hole? The spec there is #40 so if the unmarked is a little smaller I would think it is the one. The #45 should work tho but you will have to tighten up the pilot screw setting. These I understand are under EPA (bless their little hearts) plugs that will have to be drilled out of the way, if they haven't been already. My manual shows them on the top toward the engine. The usual starting setting on most of these over the years has been 1 1/2 turns from slightly snug, no torque!! If you have to drill the plugs count the turns going in till snug, I would like to know what this "top secret factory preset" is. Hope this helps, Bill

you are quickly becoming my hero, I was wondering how those plugs came out ( there is a new set in the rebuild kit). I'm not sure about the size of the holes on the pilot jet, kind of to close to call ( I even borrowed dad's bi focals to try and magnify the situation :lol: ) But now that I have some good info on everything else, thanks to you, I will go ahead and open the next baggie of parts. I was holding out until I was sure I was going the right direction just in case I had to return them for some reason. I was actually thinking about getting a new set of pods to go with the kit already in there and trying to clean those parts up, but with re-stocking fees on the carb kits I would have actually lost money( I get kind of stubborn about that) Hopefully this is the last thing I have to do this year to finally get on the road. I'll let you know and thanks for all your help.

according to bill and his shop manual a9 if we are communicating on the same wavelength as well) it sounds like they are the BS34SS. I don't know if there are any markings on them to know for sure, but I will look. Not sure how to measure them either.
 
Was just out tearing the carbs apart and soaking them in carb cleaner before putting the new parts in. I decided to try the non- marked pilot jets assuming that they might be the forty's and realizing that it would not be a huge job to swap them with the 45's later if I had to. Got Two back together so far ( left the other two together as reference material) and then the sun came over the tree line. Aside from making my tools to hot to pick up, I had chosen a lovely black t-shirt to wear this morning and was overheating a bit myself, especialy after spending about 45 minutes tring to get the second diaphragm to lay flat while I put the cover on. decided I should take a break for awhile. But things seem to be going well so far, won't know for sure until I get them back on and try to start the bike, i'm sure. Thanks for all the help so far, just wanted to let you guys know how things were going.

P.S. Bill, the air screw "factory setting" was aproxximately 2 1/2 turns out

If I'm not mistaken (thought I was once, but I was wrong), the G is shaft drive, the L is cruiser(teardrop tank, buckhorn bars,etc...) and the Z would be year of production. Bob
BTW, I've found it's easier to get those diaphragms to seat if you use a finger to hold the slide up, then run your other thumb around the diaphragm and put spring and cap on with a couple bolts then release slide. Seems to work better for me anyways.
 
According to my GS1100E manual. Main jet size for '81 is 107.5, '82 is 110 and '83 is 112.5. All have #45 Pilot.
