I have a 1978gs 750 with pod filters and a 4-1 pipe.... I have cleaned the carbs....swapped the main jets for bigger ones and the bike would raise idle once it got warm and still ran a little lean....so i tried raising the needles.....i first went #2 setting from the bottom and it fired right up but idled crazy high!!!! I messed with the air screws on the side but they seemed to do nothing untill they were only a half turn out! So i knew something was wrong......i just switched the needles one setting up to let less fuel in......thinking that i went too far.....this helped with the unburned fuel smoke out of the pipe ....but it still idles crazy high as soon as it starts. I am thinking bigger pilots? But not sure. Someone please help!!!

Did you try lowering the big idle screw knob? I ran 115 mains and 15 pilots on my 750 with the same setup. Adjust the air screws on each carb to highest idle.

yup

yup

ya....the idle screw knob is backed all the way out.......it isn't even touching the trottle cable ...... so u did have to replace the pilot jets?

Then you probably have some kind of throttle cable problem. Do you have slack in the throttle cable does it pull smooth? Do the carburetor slides fully close? Any intake boot leaks?

nope`

nope`

no no no......none of that.....i just meant that the adjuster was all the way out....intake boots are fine......and all of that.....it ran fine at idle untill i raised the needles which i had to do.......now it idles way way too high.....just wondering how to bring it down? new pilots? did you relpace your stock pilots?

im soooo sooooo over it......

im soooo sooooo over it......

so when i changed the needle setting on the slides.....this moved the slides up as well.....so i adjusted them down and this helped tremendously......how ever......i rode it around and shut it off when i got back to put my riding gear on......when i came back out 10mins later....the bike wont start......i am soooo sooo over it.....its like its flooded out......im so sick of this old junk......someone give me some direction!!!!!

I'm such a rookie when it comes to carbs and I feel your pain but can offer little help. The one thing I haven't done is start messing with pods, jets and needles. Yet.

How long have you owned the bike? Do you know about the petcocks on these old GS's? Well if you don't be sure to never park your bike with the petcock on pri. That's a good way to spread fuel all over the place I've learned. Might lead to your flooded condition too. What about your floats? Check those?

ahh yes

ahh yes

pri on the petcock is the only setting that gas will come out of besides the reserve.......but ya....if anyone is interested in the bike i will take 1500......it is completely custom....i will send pics if interested. thanks. clay

Mate, if you cant do it then why dont you take it to a bike shop and have them tune it??

A standard tune or even a dyno tune would be better than you tinkering around and getting all flustered.

My motto is that if you dont know about something and you cant solve it then take it to a specialist who does that stuff for a LIVING!

Hope this helps!

hmmmm

hmmmm

turns out....i work at a bikeshop painting motorcycles part time. i have access to one of the best mechanics in the tri state area.....u may know his son Fritz Kling (road race champ) ....anyhow....he told me like everyone else...to just leave the airbox ....he really doesn't want to mess with it and knows i can figure it out....im pretty sure i need to sync the carbs....just gotta get around to doing it.....maybe next spring i will be back into it again.
