DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The name's Jeremy, I'm 38 years old, welder/fabricator by trade, & I have ZERO idea what I'm doing:confused: LOL. If this was a 2 stroke I would be fine, but this is a whole new ball 'o wax. I got tired of building cars and always wanted to build a bike so here I am LOL. The short version on the bike, it came from a friend of a friend. Guy one bought it as a basket case and let it sit. His brother bought it, assembled it, and let it stored in his garage for almost 13 yrs. On with the pics! Here is my FREE 1981Gs650g with 7500/original miles......

Welcome. The price was right, and for a cool bike that I suspect it will clean up nicely. Good luck and enjoy.

Growing up, family vacation was spent at the Pine Creek Valley, which according to the map doesnt look terribly far from you. Nice riding in rural PA. (Hopefully) were heading there in a few weeks for a cycle trip.

Definitely tons of nice riding spots around here! Since acquiring it I've cleaned out the tank and carbs, added new battery and plugs, aaaaaaand nothing. Can't get it to fire. It kinda wants to but....nope.

Definitely go thru the info Tkent listed. The carbs and intake system will certainly need to be gone thru and properly cleaned, valve clearances checked, etc. Mine sat for 12 years and the carbs were full of green gunk.

Found out earlier I didn't clean the carbs good enough. Cyl #1 plug was wet, 2-3-4 were bone dry. Gonna tear down the carbs this weekend and run them thru the ultrasonic cleaner.

Nice. You should also do the o rings while they are apart. Check out Cycle O Rings. The owner is a member here. That and fresh intake boots made a huge difference in rideability in mine. Yours (I think) will also have o rings at the intake boot / head connection as well.

Well while starting the OFFICIAL tear down of the carbs for cleaning, we spotted a BIG problem as to why I wasn't getting fuel......
Doesn't help when all four carbs have the float needle installed upside down. Apparently a past owner was oblivious when reassembling these.

I cant tell by the photo, is that the pointy tapered end, or the spring loaded plunger end?

.

It's the pointy end, supposed to be going the other way in the seat. IDK who did it prior to me owning it but...... they "tried"....... and failed LOL.

After getting back to home base today I decided to finish up my bar swap. I wasn't digging the "lay down" crotch rocket style bars that came on it so I drilled/notched a set my neighbor gave me. I think they look a ton better.

P.revious O.wner S.yndrome rears its ugly head again.
Just keep reminding yourself it was free.
Welcome to the site.

Welcome! Yes, the bars look WAY better. I had to take a good look at the intro pic....that looked hideous.

Good job on the carbs....and thanks for posting pics.

Thank you sir! Made some progress last night...., freshened up the rear brakes, learned the front MC needs rebuilt/replaced after trying to bleed the front brakes, left fork tube needs new seals... might as well do both *shrugs*.

Update....
Got the carbs back on last night and all I got was a fuel dumping out on to my crank case and a hellacious backfire thru the carb(s). :(

Keep at it and check your float needles for free movement and floats for the correct height settings. I had to go through mine 4 times before I was able to get it running again, but now I have no doubt in my ability to tear the carbs down to nothing and reassemble them. Persistence is the key! :D

Well a lots been going, here's where I'm at......
I rebuilt the carbs and set the float height
Got them on with an OEM airbox from a doner "L" I just picked up
Cleaned up the rats nest wiring
Noticed firing order was completely wrong(PO did no favors with this think LOL)
Fed it fuel last nigh, AND I LOST SPARK!
WTF!?!?!?
I swear this thing doesn't want to run.

What makes it all frustrating is at the beginning of this adventure I had spark. Now everything is where it's supposed to be I have none.

Greetings from a fellow PA biker. Great looking project. I just brought home a GS750 that hasn't run in about 6 years. Stay with it and keep us posted.

Hey all, been a while since I've posted. A lot has been going on in my bike world. Still got the '81 650g but back burnered that when picked up another '81 650, but it's an "L" with a boat anchor for a motor. Number two connecting rod let loose at the wrist pin, needless to say it was catastrophic failure with all kinds of ugly. Well, I started chopping the frame on that one and stopped when I got to the point when it was time to find another motor. Started back on the G and it turned out the Igniter **** the bed, fortunately I had a loaner from the junked L motor. Well, fuel in the tank, fuel in the bowls, spark, no fire! Why? No fuel getting into the cylinders. Hmmmm??? Pulled the carbs, got them soaking. We shall see then. Stay tuned.
Oh, this found it's way in to my garage today.....
