    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Change Breather Cover Gasket While Checking Valves?

I was wondering if you guys also change the breather cover gasket when you put a new cylinder head cover gasket on during the valve checking process. I think it is #9 in the schematic below. Also, how about #11 & #12? Didn't know if since you had the cover off this was something to do and was just checking. :-D

Hi Mr. Chuckster,

#11 and #12 are just wire mesh pieces to help trap oil vapor condensation in the breather circuit. As long as it's in good shape there's no need to change it. I installed a Real Gasket breather gasket that's reusable. If your current paper gasket is still serviceable (it didn't tear up when you took the breather off), I don't see why you can't use it until you get a Real Gasket. There shouldn't be any liquid up that high in the motor, just vapor. Good luck and happy wrenching. :-D

well i can tell you on the later models tscc. that cover is extreamly week.. i have snaped two of them.. fragile . im not touching another one.. and whats more is i consider my self a little more experinced than most.. ( did courses in mech..)
 
No reason to remove it, unless as on my bikes the valve cover won't fit off under the frame without removing it first. Usually the gaskets come off easy without damage. Don't think I've ever had to replace one.
 
Valve cover comes off with out taking off the breather on a GS550T. I'd leave it alone. 1982 850 is another matter...

I must remove the breather first before the valve cover will come off. Even then it's kind of a tight fit in and out. I'm sure you've found this out by now. How is your new 850?

I can just get it past on the 1000G but I then remove it to make re-fitting easier (& because I use the cover as a "lid" when sourcing shims etc it goes in & out a few times!)

If it appears stuck, spray the edge with degreaser (the citrus stuff is good) loosen the bolts & then use a wooden drift & club hammer to tape each corner. If necessary if some bits are still stuck lift it slighty & spray more degreaser.... worked for me on the 78 1000 that has been stored since 82!

I found # 11 and #12 to be very brittle on mine and ordered all new.

I certainly didn't want little pieces of metal getting in the way.
