A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I picked up a GS850GL about a month ago without an owners manual or anything. i looked at the air filter today and noticed it is pretty much turning to powder. could someone explain to me how to remove the air filter please?

Why is there air?

Why is there air?

Hi Mr. GSJake,

I'm not sure if the "L" is exactly the same. But here's how I get my air filter out: Take off the left side end cap (two screws) from the airbox. Inside, on the top of the air filter cage is another screw. Remove that screw. The filter cage, with the filter, should slide out toward you. It rests on a couple of rails on the other side of the airbox.

In later models the air filter cage changed and became a "snap-in" arrangement with the snap on the right side, IIRC. You might have to remove the end caps on both sides for the removal method to become clear to you.

Let us know how you fare. I'll snap a picture if you'd like me to.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Don't remember which side cover to pull off of air filter box, but it just slides out. kinda pull out and down, whole filter assy should come out.

If it's an '81, there'll be a retaining screw on one side, and that's the side it slides towards. Sorry I can't tell you which side.

If it's a recent purchase, probably worthwhile to pull the whole thing off and give it a once over. There's a wee space up top (only about 1/8" deep) that's connected to the breather and it gets clogged up with rusty gunk (backing up your breather and pressurizing your crankcase). Cut a wire coat hanger, put a 90? bend in the wire about 1" from the end and use that to scrape the gunk out.
