    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Alright, my O-ring set arrived today from Robert Barr. I've got two sets of carbs now, so the plan is to make my second set sparkle and then put those on and make the old set sparkle and keep them in a safe place. I want to dunk in Chem Dip but the only stuff I could get at my local Napa was $50 for 4L and didn't even come with a basket. Anyone know where I can get the stuff in New Brunswick. Shouldn't it be somewhere around $15-$20?

When I do the second set, how should I store them to keep them clean/rust free? Thanks,
 
Did you try asking the NAPA guys where you might find smaller cans of the stuff? The same thing happened to me - NAPA only had large quantities - and they were happy to suggest a couple of places that stocked smaller quantities.

You can give the steel parts a light coating of oil but the carbs are mostly made of aluminum so rust isn't an issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, the NAPA guy didn't know anywheres. He suggested Canadian Tire, but the only "dip" they had was "Degreaser Dunk" in plastic jugs, would that work? They also had stuff called "releasall" that came in a metal jug, nothing specifically for carbs though. The Suzuki shop didn't have any either, they did sell me some spray carb cleaner though, said it's what they use in the shop, i had a can before and the directions are to remove the air filter and spray it in the box. I did that. They said you can just spray it in a can and then dip your carbs in that. I think I'll try it, and if it doesn't do a great job then I'll spring for the stuff from NAPA, I can do all four of my carbs, dad's 3 from his triumph, the single carb from the tractor, and the carbs on his morgan, not sure if the land rover's carbed or injected, I assume carbs as well. Does the stuff have to be used in an amount of time?
 
I don't think you're going to be able to get what you want for less. I went through the same thing and after 6 months of searching in Ontario I gave up...it's hard to buy something from a store when it's illegal. :) You may have to go down to the US if you want a can of Berrymans unless a neighbouring province hasn't banned it yet.

Berryman's is banned? Is it that corrosive? What did you use in the end Steve? And was it effective?
 
The spray cleaner is very different from the carb dip. I don't know what the dip is made of but it's water soluble. The spray is OK for removing small amounts of varnish but the dip is best at dissolving large deposits. Spraying inside of the carb mouths isn't going to touch the deposits inside the bowls and in the passages. The stuff that I got is called "chem-dip" by Berryman. It came in a gallon can with a strainer. I don't think that the dip has a limited shelf life but its use is limited by the amount of dirt it dissolves. I don't know about the other dips - maybe try to find out what the "active ingredients" are and compare them to Berrymans, etc.

My carbs were never dirty enough to need a dipping so I just used varsol and spray carb cleaner. This isn't the best way of doing it. Maybe you can do yours at highschool. They should have some carb dip kicking around assuming they have an auto shop.

A high school eh? Hmmmm, my highschool didn't have an auto shop, but I think one close by does/did, or I could try the community college. My carbs aren't that bad, I just want to really make them sparkle. I'll try to spray and if I run into reall bad gunk on my parts set I'll try varsol, did it work for yours?
 
Hey Barry...if all else fails...tear ya carbs down and ship me the parts ya want dipped and ill dip em and hit em with the bead blast machine (if my buddy put new glass beads in recently)

Ill be more than glad to hook ya up
 
Thanks for the offer. I'm hoping the parts carbs aren't too gummed up, I know that mine aren't, but once the parts carbs are sparkling they're going on and being adjusted and the old ones coming off and being cleaned and new rings going in them too, should be fun, lot's of learning. Maybe someone could just ship me some chem dip :lol:
 
According to the MSDS, this is what is in "Chem-Dip":

METHYLENE CHLORIDE (DICHLOROMETHANE) 40-45%
MONOCHLOROTOLUENE 30-35&
CRESOLS Mixture 10-15%
MIXED XYLENES 5-10%
SODIUM BICHROMATE <4%
ETHYL BENZENE <2%


Any chance you could buy the stuff online and have it shipped?
 
Guys, I think I've found a Canadian alternative to Berryman B-9.

It's call Kleen-flo Carburetor and Parts Cleaner. It comes in 4L, 9.1L and 20L (the 9.1 and 20 litres have an optional dip basket).

According to the MSDS it looks very similar to B-9

Hazardous Ingredients -- Approximate Concentration
Methylene chloride -------- 15-40%
Orthodichlorobenzene --- 5-10%
Cresylic acid -------------- 15-40%
Xylene --------------------- 7-13%
Methanol ------------------- 3-7%
2-Butyoxyethanol --------- 5-10%
Sodium chromate --------- 250 ppm

It's also a nasty dark-brown color... What are most of you doing in order to find your small bits in the tank without a basket? :?
 
I would probably try and fashion some sort of basket out of window screen or something similar.

if you have to reach into the chem dip use a pair of nitrile gloves or kitchen dish gloves. The chem dip will eat up a pair of regular latex gloves in seconds.
 
Doesn't 'Gunk' make a small dip can with a basket big enough for carbs? I remember reading something about this on here recently. See if your local auto parts store has the 'Gunk' product and give it a try.

I wish I could buy it, but Gunk in Canada does not carry it. They only have spray-type cleaner and normal parts cleaner.

For now, I've fashioned a basket out of an old Ikea metal plant pot. (I just drilled some holes in the bottom.)

Has anyone noticed any plastic looking goop in their carb cleaner. It looks almost like Glad kitchen wrap. I get some pieces stuck to the carbs when I pull it out. It comes off easily, but I'm worried it may clog a small passage.

This carb cleaner stuff is REALLY nasty by the way. I'm not enjoying working with this.

Any disposal tips?
