    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello. I recently purchased a 81 gs550 and every now and then I have a prob starting it. I always use the choke and I'm wondering if I don't need to use the choke every time or less of it because of the hot weather here...been in the 90's pretty much every day. Any suggestions are appreciated.

You may need less choke.
Play around with the setting on it. You'll find the sweet spot.
Is the valve clearance in spec?

If you need the choke even when the engine is hot, you probably need to clean the carbs and may want to check the valves clearances as well. Basscliff's site has an excellent pictorial for rebuilding the carbs as well as a write up on valve adjustment I believe. Ray

Good suggestions so far, but also be sure you are using the "choke" correctly. :o

When using the "choke", do NOT play with the throttle. In fact, do not even touch the grip.

The "choke" system is actually an enrichener, not a plate that physically chokes the intake, like cars used to do. If you open the throttle at all, you will eliminate the high vacuum that it takes to draw fuel and air through the enrichment ("choke") system.

.

You may have a lean condition caused by poor carb boots or boot o-rings and the choke compensates for it. If they are leaking they are sucking in too much air and need the extra gas that choke provides. Mine is same way but I'll be putting on the new boots/rings this week

During a "cold start", does it start right up with "choke" and after warm up, idle happily at 1200 rpm? Try using partial "choke" during warm starts and see if it comes to life easier.
