DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cleaning carbs for first time - do i need to do it again?

Hi all,

I recently bought a 1982 Suzuki gs750t (the maroon one, I wish it was the black one). Anyhow, the bike had a flat spot. When you hit 3500 rpm and continued to give it throttle, the RPMs would drop down to 2500. Continue to increase the throttle and the RPMs would suddenly jump up and you'd go flying.

From what I've heard (I'm totally new to biking), this is a sure sign you need to clean your carbs. So my wife and I got bold, ripped out the carbs and cleaned them for the very first time in our lives.

After this, I tested it a little, and only a little so far. But it seems like the problem just moved to a higher RPM range - above 4000 now. I don't know if the rpms recover at a higher range yet since it was after midnight and I was making a lot of noise in my garage.

Is this a sure sign that I have to clean them again, and this time do a better job? By the way, I soaked the main jets and washers, the needle jets, and the float needles for about two hours. After a little compressed air, the holes in the main jets looked noticeably cleaner. Could it be those little holes on the side of the needle jets that need more work? The float bowls looked gunky, but I didn't soak them as there appears to be some deteriorated rubber seal left on the edges.

Did you soak the main carb body?

Be sure to remove the diaphragm and slide from the top, also remove the idle mixture screw on top of the outlet, and remove the enrichener jet ("choke") from the left side of the body.

Hopefully you have kept track of which parts went in which carbs. Some parts, like jets, don't matter much, but if it moves, it likes to stay in the same carb.

Depending on what you are soaking the parts in, you may want to leave it longer than a couple of hours. I use Berryman's dip and leave each carb body and all its metallic parts for 24 hours. Take that carb and its parts out, rinse them off in warm water, put the next batch in and let it sit overnight, too.

When you get the carb out and rinsed off, use a strand of copper wire to poke through all the holes in all the jets to get the gunk out. Then use some spray carb cleaner, then compressed air to make sure everything is open. Do this with all the holes in the carb body, too. BE SURE TO WEAR YOUR SAFETY GLASSES, as there are some holes that come right back at you.

By the way, all this stuff is nicely summarized in the Carb Cleaning Section of the Garage on this forum.

Also by the way,...welcome to the forum. Our official greeter will be here shortly to bestow all the proper honors and privileges to which you are now entitled. \\:D/

Pardon my ignorance, but what debate?

If it's something political, it's NOT on my agenda.

Hey howdy hey!

Hey howdy hey!

Mr. arborj,

I was watching the debate too. That's why I'm late with my "unofficial" welcome.

Let it be known that on this day you are cordially and formally welcomed to the GSR Forum as a Junior Member in good standing with all the rights and privileges thereof. Further let it be known that good standing can be improved with pictures (not you, your bike)! :-D

If you'd like to replace all the rubber o-ring bits in your carbs, perhaps you'd like to visit Mr. robertbarr's website.

Thanks for joining us. As you can see, there is expert advice here. Keep us informed.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Actually, their occupation is one of the very few that is accurately named.

Looking at the latin roots of the words:
POLI - meaning many
TICS - meaning blood-sucking parasites.
