A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey guys, im in need of some probably simple assistance. I have an 81 GS650G, with the choke running up through the triple clamp with a pull knob. I realized the crappy plastic nuts that hold it in place have cracked and are no longer holding the choke open when i pull it. This can be quite a hassle as sometimes it will hold long enough to fire it up, but then other times i have to wedge something in the slide on the carb to keep it open. Now i cannot find this lever anywhere to replace it. Suzukipartshouse.com shows it in a diagram but doesnt directly list it as a part. Is it considered the cable starter? i do not know if my bike is an X model.

Yes, that is the "Cable, Starter". If you truly have an '81 bike, you have an X.

Its full designation would be "GS650GX", but the only ones that understand the "X" are the members here and the parts monkeys that look up the parts. Most people will understand you better if you say that you have a "1981 GS650G".

By the way, parts are cheaper at Parts Outlaw. :-\\\

Exactly what I needed to know. Thankyou for the info also! I tried searching the Vin and was having difficulty getting any bike specific answers.

If your VIN plate is still rather intact, look in both right corners. The upper right corner will show the production date, the lower right corner should show the letter for the year.

and just to confuse, I find THIS from Insurance Corp. of British Columbia

What is a VIN?
h e vehicle identifi cation number (VIN),
since model year 1981, is a series of 17 letters
and numbers. Accepted as the North American
standard for identifying vehicles, the
VIN provides key information about
the manufacturer, model, model year,
make, equipment and class of a vehicle.......

.....
Position 10 of the VIN (model year) cannot
be U or Z. For cars and light trucks, model
year can be determined by using the type of
character in Position 7. (if numeric = years
between 1981 to 2009) (if alpha = years
between 2010 to 2039).

works on my 81's which are indeed B in the 10th place :)

what I have been using on my 650g is a small spring clamp that I got from the PO. it works pretty great all things considered. the choke cable is on my list of things to replace, but really low until I get it running again, tires, painted, and the chrome moons on the ends of the valve cover that hides the seals.
