Ok, I've got everything back together and went for a spin. The clutch doesn't seem to engage fully. I've messed with this cable trying to get the carbs back in and I'm sure it's messed up. I'm not changing it!!!!!

It seems ok when I'm sitting on it in the garage , but when I took it for a test run it seems to not engage fully. I've got the factory manual and it does'nt specify what to do.

While in the garage it seems NOT to have any clearance and adjusting the cable doesn't do much. I may have too much tension on it after putting the carbs back in.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

essentially what I'm asking is how to adjust the clutch.

Thanks

cable

cable

You need to have the cable routed properly in a smooth path with no sharp bends or kinks, other wise all the adjusting in the world won't help, take a breather from doing the carbs witch can take a couple of days then dive back in to it and do the cable right, even if it means removing the cable !!!

The cables are adjustable from either end. Easiest is at the clutch lever. Loosen the round, quarter size lock nut where the cable goes in to the clutch lever. Then screw the adjuster in, until you have just a little free play in the lever. Hold the adjuster, not letting it move while you re- tighten the round locknut. Adjuster & round locknut should be covered by a rubber or plastic cover, depending on your particular model.

Re: Clutch Cable

Dave, if I remember correctly, yours is an 81/83 750. That is the clutch cable that connects to the outside right top rear of the transmission case. (as opposed to the ones the connect through the left side case) Your cable has three adjusters, one at each end and one in the middle under the gas tank. The amount you have to adjust the length depends on your handlebar height. Turn the adjusters at the handlebar and clutch housing ends in (towards the black cable sheath) which takes the tension off the ends. The actuating lever on the clutch housing with no tension on the cable should be directly over the sidecover/transmission gasket. The lever
is fitted to a splined shaft with a pinchbolt to lock it in place. If need by, remove the pinchbolt and reset the lever to that whey you lightly push on the lever towards the centerline of the bvike with a finger, it stops centered over the gasket line. That is the clutch fully engaged point. Now, turn the barrel adjuster out at each end of the cable . You will see the handlebar clutch lever start to move towards seating on the handlebar housing. Turn the cable adjusters in until there is about 3/32 " play in the clutch lever.
Meaning you can pull the clutch lever 3/32" while watching the lever on the transmission case and the tranny lever does not move until you have moved the handlebar clutch lever more than 3/32".

Thanks for the help guys.
What happened with the clutch cable was that I was having a heck of a time getting the airbox boots back on and the cable was getting in the way. I didn't remember (shame on me) if it went between carbs 1 and 2 or on the outside of 1. I put it on the outside. There isn't any sharp kinks or anything, but it is against the carb. The adjustment at the tranny worked fine.

She's back to running the way she used to. I must say, that is a job from H$LL. Not sure I want to tackle that again. It did teach me that I'm not as patient as I thought I was.

Thanks for all the help.

Dave
