    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok have had noise issue with 80 850 for a while now. Have taken cam chain tensioner apart clean and reset according to manual and on here. Everything inside engine looks good, just did top end rebuild this last winter. Valves checked and only two needed changed. Took starter clutch off (loads of fun) and nothing appeared bad or loose, but do have one from parts bike with only 18,000 miles on it so going to use that one. Took clutch(on right side) apart this morning and nut did seem to move ever so slightly. Took hub(?) off to check springs in back of there, they do seems pretty loose, can turn them with finger. I can't afford a new clutch hub, and one on parts bike is in same condition, so I guess I will grind off rivets install washers till springs are tighter and get rivets welded back on. This does seem to be the correct thing to do? I've never done this so wanted to make sure this is the way to go? Do I have to get a new clutch nut when putting back on bike or can I reuse old one? Thanks in advance for any help.
 
Since no responses I went ahead and ground the rivets off back of clutch hub and inserted a washer next to each spring. Nice and tight now, shouldn't have any noise due to them. Will take to welder tomorrow and should be enough rivet left to weld back together. At least one less thing to worry about! Old nut and washer look good so plan on using them. Then just have to get starter clutch off parts bike and install on my bike and hopefully no more strange noises. I have not gotten to ride much this season at all, would love to do some before snow starts showing up.
 
There's actually a kit available for your basket, heavy duty springs and plate. You still have to get it welded. My original had a broken spring in it as well. What you're doing should quiet it down

the kits near a couple hundred bucks...
it is a bear to install...nothing like the weak factory parts.
overkill for your 850 IMO.
 
Got what was left of the rivets welded to the back of clutch hub today, cost whole $10. Springs seem nice and tight now and don't rattle anymore, so should have less engine noise. Put it back on bike today and seems to work ok, but won't know for sure till get starter clutch tightened down, side covers on and run bike. I worked on both sides to try to make sure everything was tight and hopeful rid myself of the engine noise. Can't afford couple hundred dollars right now.
