    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi guys,

After installing a new clutch cable and not getting it working properly, I convinced myself it was a more serious problem with the clutch and tore it apart. Now I'm thinking the new clutch cable was just poorly installed and not properly set, so I'm trying to put my clutch back together.

I need the torque settings for the clutch spring bolts.. 1980 GS750LT. If anybody has this please let me know. I've looked through my clymer but I'm blind or something because I can't find the values.

Warren, be careful torquing up these bolts because they have been known to snap, even before the specified torque limit has been reached. I have not had this happen to me but I believe the Hap Call (amongst others) has experienced this. I seem to recall that Hap ascribed the cause to metal fatigue in the bolts, either due to repeated re-assemblies or due to loading during normal clutch use. Either way, the consensus appears to be that some gentility is required, and that a torque wrench calibrated in in-lbs (or the lower range of ft-lbs) should be used.

Don't worry, Warren, it has happened to the best of us........not me, but Hap! :wink: :lol:

Been here too! Use a 1/4 drive ratchet and the appropriate socket and torque evenly until they bottom; you'll feel when they do. No major muscle, just sinch them. I broke 3 using 10 ft/lbs of torque with a small handled torque wrench.

As for clutch cable adjustment, it is essential (at least on my 78 GS550E) to first adjust the clutch release mechanism. ESPECIALLY after having this disassembled or when insalling a new cable. Let me know if you want more information on this, and I'll be sure to copy word for word from my "tune-up" section. It is very easy, and just may cure that cable that was to tight (I'm guessing) no matter how much slack you allowed for at the adjusting bolt.

Let me know. It will take about 5 minutes for you to do.

Also, is it a huge deal if my bolts are only in at 12 ft/lbs or something like that? I plan to order new bolts and change them out at my next oil change, but I don't want to snap any more of them.

GS1000 6mm thread diameter bolts, 7.95 to 9.40 ft/lb roughly :) I still have all my original bolts, but have only had the clutch out about 6 or 7 times.
