Clutch still won't catch

Soo, I replaced all the clutch plates in my gs550 1980, and inspected the clutch cable, finding it a little chewed but intact. I thought this would fix everything, BUT

I still have this problem where the bike won't get into gear. I pull the clutch lever, put the bike into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, whatever, but they don't catch, and the bike simply rolls like it's still in Neutral.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just finished doing this with my 81 550T and what you have to do is there is:
1. make sure you put the clutch in right
2. now your done on that side so put the cover on
3. on the push rod mechanism side take the cover off and make sure the mechanism is in the right place(as far down as possible with the spring on)
4.put that big cover back on.
5. take the different colored cover on that main cover off there is a screw that doesnt have a "head" sort of speak.
6. screw this screw out or in till you get to the point where there is some resistance but not much then the push rod wont be disengaging the clutch even though you have it in gear (your problem right now!!)
7.then you will have to tinker for a bit to get it right.
8.Good luck

Good luck

Thanks for all the help.

I've managed to get the bike to go into gear!

My problem now, is that I can't get the clutch to disengage the gears. I've been playing with the "headless" screw a whole bunch, but I can only get the clutch lever to be either, A) mushy, and not doing anything or B) really hard to pull back, and still not doing anything...

Is this more headless screw tinkering I need to do? I've been playing around with it a lot, and I can't even come close to anything like the clutch functioning.

Any more ideas are welcome

It sounds like your mechanism may not be set in the correct position. You would take off the cover to check it. The arm that the clutch cable connects to needs to move in the proper arc for maximun leverage.

make sure the mechanism is on the right tooth basically twist the peace that the clutch cable connects to out then keep putting it in in different teeth till it will fit on the case with the part that the clutch cable connects to is on the bottom and as low as it can possibly go. then put it all back togeather and monkey with the "headless"(or for you head ache) screw. what I did was screw it in by hand till I couldnt then tighten it with a driver till it got evern harder than that and then I stumbled apon it working. a good way to test is to kick it into gear with the left side cover off and start it up so if it stalls right away then the clutch is good and if not then your clutch needs some work. and if you put the left side cover thing on and try starting it up and if the bike goes no where(it needs to be in gear before you start it) then you need to adjust the headache screw.

clutch problem

clutch problem

could it be that I tightened the bolts on the pressure plate (on the other side of the bike) too much?

Clutch Rod

Clutch Rod

I am having kind of a similar problem. I had a leak from the Clutch rod seal, so I took off the clutch cover, and took a look. The clutch rod slid out a little bit, so I shoved it back in and put the plate back on, and lo and behold, the clutch no longer will disengage. The helix is fine, and the cable and tension are ok as well. I took the cover off, and that clutch rod will slide out around 8", and has no resistance until you can't push in on it at all when it hits whatever is on the other side. I am waiting on an easy out to crack the opposite cover, but what do I need to be looking for? My shop manual doesn't have an internal picture of what the clutch rod does. Does anybody have an exploded view? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Jared

Yes, it is possible...

Actually no. Those bolts bottom out and just set the clutch spring preload.

Honestly, I'd like to help but it's very hard to understand what has been done up to this point. PM me if you want to chat on the phone some time, I can lead you though the adjustment process.
