A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

on my 79 GS550E,when i pull the clutch, it wont engage. goign from a standstill is pretty tricky, but i don't have any trouble running up through the gears. I figured the cable was worn past its limit so i ordered and installed a new cable. even on the tightest settings, i still cant push it around in 1st with the clutch pulled. this bike has been a teacher to me, i now know how to do a plethora of tasks i would have otherwise never learned, from a top end rebuild, lapping valves, rebuilding carbs, setting timing, wiring, and swearing 101! i guess i need a lesson in clutches now. so from your experience, what do you think is going on?

The first thing I would do is refurbish the worm drive mechanism on the side of the engine. Remove the shifter and the footpeg. Remove the sprocket cover and the cable. There will be a worm drive mechanism that you need to disassemble, clean, grease and reinstall. While you are in there, remove the long rod that goes into the engine and check it for straightness. It seldom bends, but since you are in there it is a good time to do it. This may not cure everything, but it is a normal part of maintenance for that mechanism.

is that the spring loaded part that the cable hooks onto that grabs the rod?

that shouldn't be bad at all. if the clutch still doesn't catch, do you think it could be plates or worn springs?

Well, if it still does not catch after refurbishing the release mechanism and you have a new cable, there really is not anything else left. Many claim new OEM springs will do the trick. Outside my realm of experience, though.

ok, ill try that when i get time and see what goes. hopefully that does the trick. it looked like there was a lot of grease on the rod, so maybe that is keeping it from grabbing
