    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can anyone tell me how to properly adjust a clutch? I got the darn thing back together tonight and pulled the lever. The clutch didn't seem to disengage. It pulled rather hard and then the friggin cable broke!! I tightened all bolts to 9 lb/ft. I did notice however that the PO put washers around the spacers which would likely give the clutch more tension? I pulled the cover again and found that one of the teeth in the shaft in the cover is stripped off.
I am NO mechanic and need any help I can get! Just too broke to get it done properly!
Anyone want to buy an otherwise nice bike?! I am more than a little PO'd with this thing!

A "G" motor 9 chances out of 10 the clutch arm is not indexed properly
 
So your ready to sell an 1100 just because the cable broke? Lol
What do they cost like $5-20 or something?

I've had a lot worse stuff than that go wrong on my bike.
Just relax and fix it.

No I am not REALLY selling my bike....I was just mighty PO'd last night. I want to ride the darn thing not fix it. Pretty short riding season up here. It's been in the shop for a month!!!

SqDancerLynn; Is the arm you are referring to the one on top of the clutch cover? Would this really cause the clutch to be REALLY hard to pull? Should I be putting oil in before i start adjusting? Am I maybe torqued up too tight? My Release pinion also has a stripped cog....am I screwed? Not available from Suzuki any longer.

What to do....

It is also possible that your cable was frayed already. Normally the strands at the clutch lever on the bars starts to break one strand at a time. At some point, there are too few strands left and the cable breaks.

On some bikes, the clutch cable goes to the clutch housing. There is an arm that fits on a shaft which goes into the clutch housing and actuates the clutch. The shaft is notched all 360 degrees. You can rotate the arm on the shaft to adjust for different lengths of cables.
For example, when my cable broke at Deal's Gap, I took it to Walker's for repair. He cut the cable and the housing, brazed a new ferrel on it, etc. My cable was now shorter. He then rotated the arm on the shaft to accomodate the shorter cable, and I was on my way. When I replaced it with a new OEM cable, I again rotated the arm on the shaft, and it was good as new.
 
Well, I removed the PO's home-made spacer washers from my spring spacers and re-torqued. Re-installed the cover and tried to move the lever by had which I was able to do this time. Now I am anxiosuly awaiting the arrival of my cable!
With any luck I will be riding sometime on Monday night! As long as all goes well and the clutch works properly when the cable is installed.:)
