    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Coil Relay mod help!

Voltage to my coils was low (around 10.5), so I decided to do this mod. I hooked it up and got 11.5 volts to the coils with ignition switch on. But bike would not start - no spark. I took the relay out of the circuit and now I have spark.

Here is the hookup:
1. Starter relay positive to pin 30 of the relay.
2. Orange/White wire from kill switch to pin 86 (trigger)
3. Pin 85 to ground
4. Pin 87 hooked up to Orange/white wire to coils

Is the starter relay+ the right source for pin 30? Maybe the volage gets too low when the starter is cranked?

Any suggestions appreciated. My bike is an 83 850GL.

I just did this mod and the 30 should go to the battery not the starter solenoid, yes that wire is hot also but the connections to it may be dirty.
Try wiring 30 directly to the battery and see if this helps.

Also your orange white wire should be from the coil itself.

Use a test light and touch the tabs on the relay to see if it is indeed triggering the relay and current is coming from 87.

Not sure which side of your starter relay but only one side is hot all the time the other side is only hot when you hit the start button. Like the other post said you should go direct to the battery for your power. Also I would connect the battery to 87 and not 30 as that leaves power on 87a at all times. And connect the orange /white to 30 so the coils only get power when the relay is energized. Hope this helps, Good luck.
 
I have mine hooked to the inner connection on the solenoid. Works fine for me.
 
do a search there are detailed diagrams uploaded showing exactly what to do
 
Thanks everyone. Fact is I have voltage to the coils from pin 87 with ignition switch on, so I'm not sure I can have it hooked up wrong. My 30 pin is hooked up to the inner selonoid pole, and that apparently is OK.

I took the relay out of the circuit and the bike runs great. By playing with the coil wires, my voltage went up to 11.5, so I'm happy to leave it the way it is. I'm leaving the relay and wiring in place and will try agan using your suggestions if I ever need it.
 
Are you sure you're not cutting the power to the igniter?
There is a big solder of wires in the loom O/W. One comes from the kill switch-one to the coils-one to the igniter.
If the bike runs w/out the relay you don't have it wired right. Depending also if the relay is good. Is it clicking?
 
It certainly is possible that I grabbed the wrong O/W wire assuming that color wire fired the coils and nothing else. If I decide to try again, I'll verify it is the coil wire and see if that works.

To clarify what I meant before, I hooked the O/W wire back together and removed the other wires connected to the relay.
