    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Coil relay mod Q - which wire?

Hey everybody,

quick question. I've since fed up with the rough idle and inconsistent power so I've decided to jump into the coil relay mod (something I probably should have done a long time ago). Anyways, I have a question, I'm reading the tutorials and it says to disconnect the main wire supply to the coils and connect it to the 85 or 86 terminal of the relay (I have a 4 terminal relay). As labeled with the red dot in the picture above, are those are the wires I need to cut and connect to the 85/86 terminal? If so, which one do I connect or do I converge both of them into the single terminal? After, do I run a single wire out of terminal 87 of the relay and split them into 2 to each of the coils? Sorry for the confusion, I know this should be easy but I'm more of a wrench turner than an electrician :D

Yes, both of those wires are joined and connected to terminal #87 on the relay. Those two orange/white wires join up together somewhere deeper in the wiring harness anyway.

Then, wrap up one of those orange/white wires coming out of the harness so that it doesn't short out. Connect the other orange/white wire coming out of the harness to terminal #86 on the relay.

Connect terminal #85 to ground.

Connect terminal #36 (30?) to the positive bolt on the starter soleniod, or to the positive terminal of the battery. Don't forget to put an inline fuse on this wire (15 amps).

Leave the other wires from the coils connected as is (the green/yellow and white?).

Don't forget to do all this work with the battery disconnected. :eek:

Have you adjusted your valves yet? I'm thinking of doing mine at my next oil change. Why don't you join me?

Thanks for leading me in the right direction, I'll finish her up tomorrow when I get the chance and see she turns out. I would most certainly like to take you up on the offer for the valve adjustment. I'll take any opportunity to learn anything I can on the Ol' 550. Any group rides in the works? We definitely need to do one of those again :)
