coil relay mod

So I'm going thru my electrics for a possible fault in the coil circuit and a question came up. I performed the coil relay mod some time back and wondered if the coil i purchased wasnt sufficient for the load. It was a standard relay for automotive use 12v. Should I have looked for something more?

did you mean to say relay?

A standard auto 12 volt 4 or 5 pole relay is what you need. Usually they are sold for powering lights or horns.

With the relay in place in the coil mod, it either works and switches the straight 12 v to the coil or it doesn't work period.

I don't know what your issue is but did you check that you are getting the full 12 v coming from the relay?

Maybe you can tell us ore of what is going on and we can help sort it out.

A common automotive relay should be more than adequate to handle the amount of current the coils require. Unfortunately, a lot of the common auto chain store relays are garbage so good luck with that. I strongly suggest looking for a name brand relay (Delco, Nippondenso, Bosch, Hitachi, etc) over an off brand Chinese relay.

Regarding the coil relay mod in general, I've done it on several bikes but feel it's an inferior method to assure the coils get the proper voltage compared to properly cleaning the harness terminals and feeding the voltage per Suzuki's design. Problem is it's hard to do this type of work with the harness installed in the bike. With the harness on a workbench though, it's easy enough work to extract the terminals from the plastic harness shell and clean them properly. I used diluted HCl acid, and have read about people using phosphoric acid or even vinegar. After cleaning, pinch any female elements closed to assure solid contact with the matching terminal ends.

thanks all, I did mean relay, and not coil, and yes I believe its a bosch if memory serves. I will check the voltage from the relay to assure its 12..... As for the issue, pipes 1 & 4 didnt warm up the other day, and when I restarted it about an hour later they came up to temp with 2 & 3. Chasing electrical issues with the coils...

BTW, is your avatar photo correct in showing your bike running an open exhaust? Maybe the carb jetting is the problem, not the ignition?

Pipes are short but baffled. Stock Jets. Pod-like intake with restriction plates. Needle clip one notch rich. There could be issues with jetting, however this problem is fairly recent and I have 2 seasons on this setup.

I had a relay go bad. It would only latch with 11vdc. When I turned the key on the headlight coming on was enough to drop my battery voltage to 10vdc and the relay wouldn't latch. No voltage to the coils. New relay - no more problamo.

I am assuming you used one relay for both coils? If the relay is working for one it's working for both.

if you used separate relays one of them could be faulty. More likely some connection is loose or something.

yes, I did use one. I couldnt remember where it branched off to feed both. I didnt see any bad connections from the coil to the relay, I will have to chip away at the JB weld i put over the coil connection after a repair some time ago. Not sure where else to look...

Pull the plugs and check for spark on all cylinders. If you have a good spark on all of them then you need to look elsewhere.
