A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cold start problem- only bump start when cold

Hi guys

My Gs1000 G wont start when I push the start button. It just turns over.
I then have to bump start the bike and when I do, it starts right up. It idles perfect and rides very well. Starts very easily after that when using the button.

I checked the valve clearance and : Ex 1 - 0.05mm
2 - 0.07mm
3 - 0.06mm
4 - 0.12mm

Intake 1 to 4 - 0.02mm.

What do you guys think? Can these figures be the reason for the cold start(first start of the day) issue?

Borderline ignition wiring is the only thing that makes sense to me. The starter is pulling your available voltage below what your ignition needs to produce a strong enough spark to light things up. A bump-start doesn't influence available voltage, and it starts.

A meter across your coils might show a drop, but I doubt a mid-level meter would be quick enough to provide any useful data. A more advanced meter that can record min/max would be more helpful. The best (& least expensive) approach is empirical; wire in the relay mod. If that works, you've found (and solved) the problem at the same time.

There are other reasons to measure & investigate anemic voltage to (or from) your ignition switch (horn function, signals, headlight intensity, etc).

Is there a tutorial for the relay mod?
My horn does not work. It sounds like it wants to but only makes a quick soft horn sound and then nothing.

If your intake valve clearances are at 0.02mm than they are way too tight and you'll want to adjust them.

Okay I will. How do I go about cleaning the harness? Is cleaning all the connections and grounds enough? Will it help to reduce the voltage drop?
