Compressor Noise Reduction

I have an oil less Sears unit in my garage. At some point the muffler/air filter either fell or vibrated off the intake side. I really did not notice this other than when it kicked on it was VERY loud the last few years but since it did not run it a lot I just lived with it. I might still make a cabinet for it but ordered a new "muffler" and foam piece thru Sears parts direct for it to at least get it back to its original form. They are pretty cheesy plastic and foam parts but it made a HUGE difference in the noise level.

The new cheesy assembly

All done, winter project in the background. :dancing:

I plan on boxing mine in this winter, since I installed the overhead reel and have some left-over plywood from the mini-barn shelf. I will try to do some sound meter readings for before and after.
BTW, the project looks like one of those old 1100L things. Aren't they all parted out by now? And where do you find Dunlop Qualifiers anymore? ;)

My HF compressor is so loud it wakes the neighbors up if I forget to switch it off and it kicks in at 2:00 AM

I think it would need a full insulated box to quiet it down. :-\\\

I agree that insulation is key. Otherwise you just have sound rattling around in a box. My compressor is similar to a HF unit, one piece motor/compressor, 20 gallons, and noisy. Even if I were to make it 10-20 dB quieter I am sure my neighbors would appreciate it. I know I would.

I believe I have the same compressor ? Maybe I should check mine too !!
It's always been noisy since new

#2 Yesterday, 11:57 AM bonanzadave Good info. I have the same compressor with the same broken part. I would like a reason to get a new compressor but I just cant kill this ol dog.

I know what you mean. Other than being loud it has been a good unit.

Jeez, George you much have too much time on your hands. With I am sure your "hunt & peck" typing skills and cloven hoofs this must have taken at least an hour for you to type. :p ;)

I have a bad Campbell Hausfeld compressor ... If somebody wants the intake muffler they're welcome to it. Let me know!

Regards,

I had almost the same Craftsman compressor and what a friggin POS that was SO LOUD ! Great tip !

My tip to all is when you're Craftsman takes a dump beyond repair, treat yourself to a Rolair compressor ! They are awesome ! Still slightly loud, but night and day difference in shorter pressure up run times ! My Rolair goes from 0-140 psi in under 2 min...

I used to turn on my Craftsman the night before, and by the second day of non stop running, she was almost up to 50 psi !! :D

I've had my oil-less Craftsman for over 20 years...about 5 years ago it did this and I just picked up a rebuild kit for the pump...didn't cost much and it's been like new ever since...

Noisy though....:D

I tried rebuilding my craftsman as well, it lasted about another 2 years, then the rod/piston assembly literally snapped in half destroying the compressor.

I have two old Craftsman compressors. the 1HP is 25+ years old and the other a 2HP that is 35+ years old.

you can keep your noisy pieces of junk... :D

That was back in an era when Craftsman stood for great quality. The stuff from the last 15 years or so is just more third world garbage.....
