    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

compufire question

The various threads and the input of my mechanic have me very confused on the compufire RR install. I have a 78 gs1000E.

I took the compufire unit to a mechanic and gave him the appropriate write up links and asked him to install it while he was doing a valve job. He returned it saying my bike has a 2 phase system and the compufire is a 3 phase so it wont work.

I am under the impression that he is either incorrect or at the very least the compufire unit is supposed to correct a poor design from suzuki and I should go ahead and install the unit.

Is there something I am missing?

You're just missing a thinking mechanic! Your old bike likely has a seperate rectifier and regulator- your mechanic just saw the regulator (with two wires) and was stymied. The compufire replaces both the regulator AND the rectifier.
P.S. I'd probably check his valve work
 
I agree, you are missing a good mechanic. :-\\\

Is the "valve job" that his is doing a complete rehab of the cylinder head or just an adjustment?
Either way, I would also question his work.

Your not missing anything. Your bike has a 3 phase charging system.

that is what I thought. He was recommended to me by a few people who have older bikes. He was doing an adjustment and a few other minor things I didnt want to mess with. I got it back in worse shape that when I took it to him. Lesson learned.
 
Find a new mechanic.

It's critical to rewire the charging system if you want the bike to be reliable. The stator must be wired directly into the R/R, bypassing the factory harness. Make sure the R/R is grounded to a solid frame point or the battery. Not to the electrical panel or battery box. Lastly, the R/R power output circuit, feeding into the fuse box, must be checked for resistance build up in the connector terminals and cleaned appropriately. All this is critical and must not be deviated.
