    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Concern about my carbs

So I have carbs from 2 different racks that Im having to put together to make one good rack...

Here are the carbs. Both from the same position on each rack and both are the same size and seem to be the same other than the little hole inside the body.

The one on the right is from the original rack and the one on the left is the one in question here.

The small hole. What is this hole for? Can I use this carb body with the rest of my carbs that look like the carb on the right? Will it effect performance? Is this even a concern?

PS: my bike is a 1980 GS1000g. No idea what bike the other carbs (the one on the left) are from. I do know that they are the correct size.

I believe you could tune it to run very close to the other carbs, you may need to turn the mixture screw a little farther in or out to get it perfect. Those tiny ports are designed to help the engine transition from idle to very small throttle openings. Probably they had more of those ports on later carburetors to get cleaner emissions or something. At normal cruising throttle openings up to full throttle there would be no effect at all, it's just a transition thing.

Yeah, just run it, you should have no problems at all other than a slightly different screw adjustment, final answer.
 
Tkent might be right about that "transition port" thing.

Most of the carbs I have seen have had the transition port at the top of the bore, right where the throttle plate sits.

This is the first time I have seen such a hole at the bottom, and I have seen many, MANY sets of Mikuni GS carbs.

A bit of flux and silver solder and you could kiss that hole good-bye.

Hmm well choose an appropriate solder and rock on.
Scotch tape is too flimsy.
 
I think Ill just not worry about it and adjust accordingly if it needs it.

My VMs from my '79 550 have those holes. Not that it helps answer your question lol
