DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am considering buying a 1979 GS850G 14k miles per odometer. Seems like it would be a decent project. Owner says that it has a leak which is coming from the right side where the cylinder head meets the crank case. Does run but says it needs a tune. Any other major known issues to look out for. Any inputs/opinions on on whether it be worth it or pass on it. Thanks.

The oil leak and the sellers wording is concerning. The head connects to the cylinder, not the crankcase.
If it is indeed a leaky head gasket or the base gasket (where the cylinder meets the crankcase. his wording causes this question), you will be buying a project bike. if the leak is just the valvecover gasket or the half moons, and leaking down, not a big deal. If that checks out ok, still figure for catching up on deferred maintenance, especially the valve adjustment.

Hey thanks, yeah the wording isn't the best. I am suppose to go look at it Saturday. Did say that its a steady leak at high RPM's.

So I spoke with the seller again to get a better understanding and they confirmed that indeed it is the base gasket that is leaking. Right side where "block meets crankcase". He's asking $700 for the bike.

You sure that bike has 14k or 114k? Photo suggests the later.

Yeah, the worn-away lettering around the warning lights on the gauges, and the fading away of the orange color on the tips of the speedo and tacho needles point to a well-used bike.

Pretty rough for 14K but it is only $700. Not a big fan of the 79' as it's a one year bike, the 80s and newer have some different features/ parts. Let us know how it goes in person.
