    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

correct mini speedo?

I just installed a mini speedo on my 84 1100 gl. It doesn't read correctly. I got it at a swap meet so I'm not out much money. I really like the look of the small speedo and was wondering if the ones from JC Whitney would work. If anyone has used one of these or knows where to get something similar I would appreciate all input.
 
I just ordered the speedo and tach from JC Whitney yesterday and should have it soon. As soon as I have them mounted, i will let you know how they work.
 
I have ordered one of those Sigmasport digital speeds - they are suppose to be very accurate. comes with all fitting. I have seen them on some bikes.
 
thanks guys. I like the Jc whitney one, the looks of it suit the stripped down look of my bike. I hope they work, it's a little nerve racking meeting a cop when you have no idea what speed you are going.

SigmaSport BC1600 user here, Love it to death :)
 
Wait, let me get this straight. You are using a SigmaSport BC1600 bicycle computer on your bike! This is a great idea. I'm not sure of the set up. but the consept is good. how did you accomplish this?

Its actually really easy. Buy the speedo at a bike shop, epoxy the magnets and the pick up and then use the rubberband mounting for the handlebars :)

Took me less than an hour to set it up. The trickiest was the setup for the head unit based on tire size (diameter).

Here's a shot with the dash stripped and speedo mounted. I am not overly fond of the way the LEDs came out after I put them in, but I am still working that out.

Here are the guages from JC Whitney mounted. I was able to use the mounts that held the stock guages to mount the new tach and speedo. I think it turned out pretty well. I am spent some time after I took this picture to re-route the wires and cables. Now I just have to figure out how to fabricate some idiot lights that look good.

Ahhh, the great clubman bar debate. It is more of a personal preference. In my case, if I tried to mount the bars the other way, I couldn't clear the schrader valve on top of my forks without adding risers. I rode about 150 miles with them this way yesterday and they were surprisingly comfortable.
 
Well then that's all that matters. I figured comfort was the reason.

For the most part, they work great. I need to figure out a way to mark 9k on the tach that looks good so that I know where the redline is. My only complaint is that they are a tad small and since I am not familier with the guages yet, I have to look at it closer than I would like to see how fast I am going or the tach speed. The only idiot lights that I really care about are the oil pressure and neutral lights, so I need to figure out someway to fabricate the lights keeping with the clean look of the guages.

All I really want is a neutral light. Here is what I am thinking. Expanding on your idea of putting the lights in the headlight bucket, just putting one light there for the neutral light (kind of like the old fashion bikes). The other option I was thinking of was somehow drilling out the screws of the bolts on the handlebars and putting LEDs there. However, what scares me is weaking the bolts enough that I could potentially break them leaned over in a corner. If both of us put out heads together, we should be able to come up with something that looks extremely good...
 
Do not drill out those bolts. even though this is a good idea in theory, This is seldom a good idea in practice.
I teach electronics at a college. one of my students had the bright idea to light his bike with LEDs (accent lighting). He found that a black Lego block was perfect for this. he found that he could drill out the 8 raised mounting points on the Lego out andfit 8 LEDs in those holes and he could fit the resistor for the LEDs in the back and fill it with epoxy for a water tight seal. This went one step further when another student with an older bike had the same need you do so he took one of these "Lego LEDs" and mounted it to the block that holds the handlebars on with the four screws over top of the suzuki sticker and it looked great. Just a thought.
 
The lego idea is brilliant. I will see what I can whip up this weekend if I have time. Will post pics if it works.

Anybody every try this? Looking at cleaning up the lights and
wondered how this turned out.
