    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Correct resistance in GS850G plug caps??

Just got the bike started after 2 years of resto work.
I now know that there is an issue with the insulated spark plug caps allowing the spark to earth before reaching the spark plug electrode.
I will of course replace all.
However they are not available from Suzuki in Australia.
I see plenty on Ebay ex USA but postage is a killer.
NGK may have suitable replacements down under but I would like to know the resistance specification for the originals so that I can compare to anything from NGK.
Can anyone provide this information?
Has anyone used NGK replacements?
 
The "correct" resistance is about 5k ohms.

Note that there are three places where you can get this resistance, any of which would be acceptable:
1. "Resistor" or "suppression" wires.
2. "Resistor" plug caps.
3. "Resistor" spark plugs.

You only need ONE of these sources, definitely not any more than that.

1. For the wires, you might be able to go to your local auto parts store and get some generic suppressor wire. You would have to ensure that your caps have virtually NO resistance by removing any built-in resistor and replacing it with a small bit of wire. A piece of coat hanger or welding rod works well.
2. For the caps, NGK is a good source, but as you are finding, might be a bit expensive.
3. For the plugs, look around for some BR8ES plugs. You will still need to make sure your caps have no resistance, and you will be able to use your stock wires.

You should also note that the primary purpose for the resistance in the system is to prevent radio interference with the cars around you, mainly those that are using AM radio frequencies. That was quite a concern back when these bikes were new, not so much of a concern nowadays. You will probably do just fine with no resistance in the system at all.

With the NGK plug cap numbers provided by fastbysuzuki I managed to track some down at less that 10 aussie dollars each.
I already had a new set of B8ES plug so with the original wires, new plug caps and these plugs I reckon the system is back to original specs.

THe plugs can short to ground, er, earth.
THe caps have no connection to earth.
Problem with caps can be that the resistor in them over time and heat can increase from its intended 5K to be 3 or 4 or 5 times that and then go completely open. And is a common ignition problem.
SO, yes, they do need to be replaced sometimes.

No, do not at all need OEM replacements.

Most every bike will have the NGK. CAn get them from about any motorcycle parts supplyer, need not be a zuki dealer.

NGK part numbers stated sound familiar. THe two longer ones are for the inside cylinders.

Yes, those caps are what you want with the original spec plugs.

As I remember the difference in those NGK caps is that 2 of them are 90 Deg wire connectors and 2 are 45 Deg connectors. The 90's go on 1 and 4 and the 45's go on 2 and 3 so the wires clear the head/hot spots.
