    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

cracked a pickup in the ignition sensor - will this be a problem?

Well, it seems that when I installed the new (used) ignition sensor on my GS700 I didn't check the clearances quite right, and must have put the plate on slightly to the side or something (there isn't much adjustment that you can do, but I suppose there must be a tiny bit).

At this point, it looks like this:

I started it up, idled for a couple minutes, revved it a few times - all seemed well. It was only later when I took a couple pictures that I noticed the cracks. In other words, it currently runs fine.


So, is it going to come apart or is it going to be fine for a while? I'd obviously prefer not buying another one, and that's the same pickup as was 100% destroyed on the other sensor I have.

It does not look like it got banged out of place, so it should be OK. You might want to dribble some epoxy over it to maintain water resitance.

My thought was that even if it got banged out of place a little bit, it would be retarding the timing - so it might hurt power, but it wouldn't hurt the engine at all.
 
Ride it. Keep an eye on Fleabay and buy a used one for less than $20. Replace and ride.
 
Boy, It should clear as long as you have it pressed into the appropriate spot where it is not on top of the tabs, if that makes sense... On mine I slotted the holes where the screws hold the plate tight with a grinder and then I could advance the ignition timing a few degrees for a little better performance.

It also looks like you may need a better set of screwdrivers! unless that was from the PO
 
Yeah, I wasn't expecting to have to check for clearance at all which is why I didn't. The rotor doesn't wobble or anything, and both of the screws holding the plate on are tightened down and fit the holes in the case properly. Everything was tightened down reasonably before I started the bike (no, I didn't check the torque specs but I did it to what seemed reasonable for a bolt that size). I just figured it would all fit fine, but I can't figure out how else the damage would've happened.


However, the old rotor on my bike seems to have been off a GS750 - the board with the pickups has GS750 and some other stuff in grease pencil on the back. It seems to rev better now, which I guess is due to advanced timing vs the 750 or something (that's all I can think of).

Edit: and those are the best of the 4 screws that I ended up with - 1 was from my bike, 1 came with the new sensor. I was using a couple craftsman screwdrivers, both in good condition (I decided to use a flat head for the one that could take either, as the slot was in better condition). The oil pressure sensor I used a socket on, not a screwdriver - I wish all of these could be done with sockets.

update:

it's now popping a lot at partial throttle, and not running all that smoothly either (only on low throttle amounts, on the freeway it's fine). this is on 2 of the cylinders I think, so I don't think anything got into the carbs. Makes sense for what would happen if one of the ignition pickups was going out, too.

I think I'm buying another one, I'll make damn sure it's on right this time. I wish I hadn't assumed that the very small amount of movement you can do wasn't an issue, but oh well.
 
I have one off an 80 750. Dunno if it'll work, but if ya want it lemme know.
 
I don't think it will, and I've already got a line on one from someone else. Thanks for the offer though.
