    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cracked oil pan gs400...options?

I found the reason for a small leak in my 78 gs400... the pan is cracked right near where the drain plug is so the plug doesn't tighten correctly.

The way I see it, I have to get another motor if I don't want a leak. You can't weld it and jb weld only works for so long. Am I right?


If I get another motor, what are my options?
- gs400 motor obviously
- 450?
- twin 500?

I need something that will pretty much bolt in with little fab work. What do you think?
 
Does the 400 not have a separate oil pan? :-k

Most of the GS series has an oil pan that bolts on to the bottom of the engine cases. It would be far easier to just replace the pan, not the whole engine. 8-[

Pretty simple job to change a sump cover - assuming the bike has one (450 does). Be careful of the exhaust pipe header bolts though since they like to snap off - you might want to soak them down for a couple of days with penetrating oil before attacking them with a wrench.

It does not have a sepparate pan...my brother (who owned the bike before me) had checked into that.

Why can't it be welded? Have a qualified welder check it out. maybe you'll be surprised.
 
So far no luck with the welding...I'll check on that more.

What are my motor options if I can't get it welded....what fits?
 
just one possible option. may or may not work out, but I just did a quick search and there is a tech school in Scranton, PA that has a welding program, there may be others too. with it being a school you may be able to get it done for close to nothing to give a student some practical experience.
